hello forum, and ty for being here......I have a 2 year old dreammaker 4 person spa that the motor went bad on........i have just purchased a AOsmith 1.5 hp motor/pump combo.....but it has a couple more terminals than my old one......my gfi is in the powercord...the cord has 3 wires black...white.....green.....i know the green one is ground and the white is com......the black is line.....now having said this the motor says #2---line
#3 highspeed #4 lowspeed but at the end of the diagram on the motor.......theres an arrow joining the line 3 and line 4 together....making me think there tied together and is actually a 1 speed motor.......do i put the black wire on line 3 and the white wire on #1 line? please help......im confused.

#2 Line -attach white wire
#3 High -attach black wire
#4 Low -attach nothing
Ground wire -Attach grounding wire (Green)

Thing is your 1 speed was 3450 RPM, the 2 speed is 1725 (low) and 3450 (high). You want it to run in high. Also check your AMP ratings, I bet you original motor was actually a 1 HP marked with a "marketing HP"of 1.5HP, these spas are typically set up to run on a 15 AMP circuit so the max load would be 12 amp, if your new one runs more than 12 AMPs you could be tripping your breaker, and it is actually to big.

Make sure your new motor is 115V.

Thank you jeffz for your speedy reply. Im sorry for the name change here from Teddy to sparks but i couldnt seem to log in under the password i created. I have hooked the motor up Following your above instructions.the motor runs great and pumps water wonderful,however i do have another problem now. it will run about 30 minutes then shut itself off.i done an Amp check as you suggested to do. my readings were as follows....Peaked at 37.6 amps and fell to 14.8 amps......Amps seem to fluxiate up and down from 14.8 down to 14.4 then back up to 14.9. the spec plate says continouse run 11.60 Amps....is this another bad motor or is there anything that would make it run at such high aps? the motor is shutting off and trying to save itself.....the gfci is not tripping,only the thermal protector in the motor is tripping. i was always under the understanding that its the motor itself that decides how much amps to pull.correct me if im wrong....im no electrician.I sometimes wonder if having a spa is more trouble than its worth but im in it to deep now to back up. thanks in advance for any help you can offer....I know the pple who sold me the motor is gonna tell me it must be somthing else causing this high Amp reading.i need to know how to respond to them if the motor turns out to be the cause of this.

Sparks, If the plate says 11.6 that is the highest it should run, as you have found out. Try removing any restriction you can, take out the filter first, then look at the plumbing best you can for restrictions. It sounds like the right set up, but something it causing the high AMP draw. Make sure the motor and wet end match up on horsepower, the Vico impeller has a single "Black" strip painted on the end of the impeller shaft, the 1.5 hp has a "red and green" strips painted on it. If the motor is a true 1 hp and they put a 1.5 hp impeller on the motor, the motor will draw high AMPs.

Jeffz, I owe you one. You were right. My original pump had a single black stripe. But the motor said 1.5 hp. So I ordered a motor and pump for a 1.5. They sent me the 1.5 pump green and red stripe but seem though a motor that is 1 hp. This is my question to you, the company is sending me another 1.5 and I am keeping the 1.5 they sent me. The 1 hp pump and motor that original came with the spa had specs of 11 amps. The company told me that the 1.5 they are sending me is designed to draw 16 amps. Will this in any way cause harm to my circuit board? I will be running on a 20 amp dedicated circuit. I just want to make sure that going to a 1.5 hp from from a 1 hp is acceptable from this Dreammaker Xspa. On a 20 amp circuit, 16 amps will be fine because it is at or under the 80% threshold on the circuit. The circuit board should be OK, most of the relays have a 20 amp rating as well.

As long as you have the correct set up, motor with enough HP to drive the pump, your problems should be over.
