New Spa Motor Will Not Run

Nice site! Here’s my situation…

Just replaced pump/motor unit on aftermarket spa that uses Nu-Wave Supreme Series controller, which worked fine when bearings gave out on old motor. New pump/motor is Ultrajet Ultima Plus ENERGY EFFICIENT Spa Pump 3.0HP 230V 13A. I wired motor exactly like old one, but motor will not turn. Controller and connection seem to work properly (lights come on when commanded; power is at controller plug-in point as commanded; and all connecting wires from controller to motor test good).

Here are a couple of specifics that may help:
- With spa controller showing “low speed” or “high speed” on and voltage tester connected to common (WHITE wire) and either high or low speed terminals on motor, tester shows zero volts.
- With spa controller showing “low speed” or “high speed” on and voltage tester connected to GROUND (GREEN wire) and either high or low speed terminals on motor, tester shows 120+ volts.

Accordingly, my questions are:
- Is the new motor faulty? Seems to me that if wiring is connected properly and power is available from the controller at the commanded settings, then something in the motor is amiss.
- Should I connect current directly to the low (or high) speed terminal and ground to determine if the motor will run at all? Or will that short out something that will void my warranty?

I’m no electrician, but I can read a simple wiring diagram and operate a tester. Am I missing something?
Thanks, JJ in Florida

Re: New Spa Motor Will Not Run

You're not getting 120v to your common line. Assuming the old motor was 230v as well, right? Check your fuses.

Re: New Spa Motor Will Not Run

spishex... Thanks for the reply. Yes, the old motor was 230v. Circuit is connected to a 50amp circuit breaker, which is providing power.

What "fuzes" do you mean, exactly? How should the common (whtie) wire get its 120v? Are you saying that the common wire should carry current from the spa controller?

Again, I'm not an electrician, but I can take directions. So please tell me where to go from here.

'Preciate it! JJ in Florida

Re: New Spa Motor Will Not Run

There are probably one or more SC or SLC 20 (or some similar 20-30 amp) fuses in your control, either mounted on the board or wired in-line and mounted somewhere else inside the box. Either pull them and check for continuity, or better yet test them on the board against the opposite phase wire to be sure you get 230v on both sides.

Yes, for a 230v motor the white line will carry 115v from the control regardless of speed. The other 115v will come on the red or black line depending on speed.
