Hello,

I need to wire a spa. Manuf says to use 6/3 wire with ground and a dedicated 60 AMP GFCI.

One of my issues is that the main panel is on the opposite end of the house, say 70 feet away (through the basement, mostly)

I have heard that GFCI's do not like this kind of length, so I was going to wire a seperate panel for the spa around 20 feet away in the basement with a gfci. This box would then run to my Main 200A panel.

So to recap, I have 50 or so feet of wire inside my basement to a gfci box. Then I have a run of 20 or so feet to the spa. There will be a disconnect outside also (greater than 5 feet away from the tub).

My question is then, what size wire should I run from:
1. Main panel to GFCI Junction Panel (inside basement) approx 50 feet
2. Junction GFCI Panel to disconnect and tub. approx 20 feet outside not buried.

What type of PVC? Diameter and schedule? Should I use 4 awg?

Good question. Can anyone answer it? I have the same situation and I am assuming I would use a 60 amp breaker, wire to the GFCI close to the tub, and then from there to the tub heater.

Any other ideas?

6ga wire should be sufficient for that application. Your run is under 100 feet and should account for little loss. The gfi should be located as close as convienent to the tub. The disconnecting means must be located no less than 5' of the tub, and no more than 10'. 1 1/4" sch 80 for outside, same but sch40 is sufficient for inside. You can run an 8ga ground wire to save on the conduit space. You can use 1" but it's a lot easier to pull that wire in 1 1/4"
