| Updating a Morgan Digital Command Center Spa Pack - Questions |
I have a circa 1995 Morgan Hot Tub "project" I am working on. It's an extra deep and extra large model. Very nice shell I intend to keep around for a long while.
It came factory equipped with a digital/electronic topside control panel and a single circuit board in the pack. Everything is marketed as "Morgan" but it's really Balboa Instruments. The circuit board is a Balboa 50745.
The circuit board in the pack also has a good bit of corrosion on some components and relays. I'm going to attempt to solder in new relays and see what happens. These on-board relays sell for about $3 each online.
I know I can do an install of any old spa pack and be done with it. BUT... I don't want to do that because I am plumbed for a "L" shaped heater and have loads of spare parts already oriented for Morgan's plumbing layout.
3 pumps and wet ends (two 2-spd and one 1-spd)
2 clean and corrosion free "L" shaped 5.5k watt heaters
1 working air blower
A somewhat functional pneumatic Morgan pack with electronic TecMark topside control
Plus lots of plumbing parts I stripped out of another Morgan spa.
So I really want to keep the thing all Morgan inside.
Now the question is, does anyone know if this new Balboa branded topside control will work with my circuit board in the pack? By all indications, it should. Size is the same. Button labels and layouts are the same. Ribbon cable is the same.
I really don't want to slam a generic pack in there and have to replumb the suction and discharge lines from "L" shaped to flow-through heater.
Replacing the circuit board with a new one at $280 ( http://www.actionsparepair.com/morgan.html ) and the topside control with new at $235 ( http://spapartsnet.com/Control-Panels/5... 2_1_1.html ) is roughly the same cost as new control pack, but I can still put my spare parts to use down the road if I go with the "OEM style" update.
I see no sense in buying a new control pack with new heater and having to change plumbing around when everything else in my spa is still in good working order. |

Yes it will.
It's a standard adaptation. |

Thank you for the confirmation. It seemed the obvious answer was yes, but I thought I'd play it safe before spending $500!
I was out fiddling with the spa again... yes, at 1:00 am. lol Seems that it TRIES to respond. I can sorta see a garbled display if I give the LCD a bright backlight. Also, flipping the breaker on and off will yield various actions. Sometimes the turbo pump will kick on, sometimes the light goes on and off. Other times the heater tries to kick on. Sometimes the controller even tried to run high and low at the same time till the pump overheats and shuts down Not good!
The electronics and digital display is really nice, but I sure wish this old free spa would have been equipped with the regular control pack and pneumatic controls. Much cheaper to repair and easier to rig into operating on the fly!! lol
I'm just gonna go ahead and buy the new board and control and call it done. An early Christmas present! |
