Balboa Lite Leader Overheating

Hi, I've been searching the net and have landed here for some advice. Please bear with me as I try to explain my problem. I'm in the UK and have a small Spaform Oslo hot tub with a Balboa Lite Leader Controller. This was working fine for around the last 12 months until recently when it started overheating. I did the usual, shut it off, took the cover off and let it cool down. This was ok for a few days then the same thing happened again. At first I thought the thermostat was faulty, but I watched as the temperature display was creeping up while the spa was on a fast filter cycle. The heater light was not showing on, so the spa was heating higher than I had set it. It only stopped when the hi limit sensor kicked in. My opinion is that the PCB is faulty, perhaps the heater relay is sticking on when it should be off. My basis for this opinion is that the tub doesnt seem to know that it's overheating, although the temp display shows that it is. I took the PCB out at the weekend to inspect and couldnt see anything obviously wrong with it, nothing looking fried or cracked. Has anybody any ideas on this as I am on a tight budget and buying the PCB alone is not the cheapest thing in the world, although I am tempted to try this. Thanks Steve <img src=" title="Confused" />

Re: Balboa Lite Leader Overheating

I have resolved my problem, I'm posting this so as to answer an email I received, but couldnt figure out how to answer it through the site !!! It also seems other people are having the same problem... I was positive the heater relay was at fault, which is the top right relay on the board. I ended up buying a new board, £180 ish, and a new set of temp and hi-limit sensors £40 ish (just in case) that, coupled with a tin of expanding foam for a few £. If anyone needs to know where I bought them, (I assume I cant post it here), so just PM me. The board was easy to fit, as all the connectors were like-for-like on the new board. The company I bought from were very helpful and talked me through the board details. It turns out I had a 4-5 year old board, and the guy said that they only have a limited life of about that long anyway. They boards are one of there biggest selling items!! Anyway, I hooked everything up, fitted the sensors, very easy aswell, and set the temp sensor with foam. I fired everything up, and all was working fine. The tub got up to temperature (36c) and I was very happy, until the following morning when it had overheated again. I switch it off and sulked for a few days, expecting to have to pay exorbitant fees for someone to come out to it. The following weekend I had a look again at the new board i'd fitted, and saw that the heater terminal (top right, black wire, just above the large fuse) had bent down to touch the fuse, when I had fitted it, and I hadnt seen it then. This meant that the heater was receiving power all the time, thus the overheat. I carefully bent the terminal away from the fuse (with the power off), and I now have a fully working hot tub!!! So in summary, in my experience, the board was faulty, but be careful when installing the new one. Hope this helps Steve (think I will jump in the tub now !!!) <img src=" title="Very Happy" /> <img src=" title="Very Happy" /> <img src=" title="Very Happy" />
