GFI Breaking when pump turned on but pump works on clean cycle

Hi,

I have just moved into a house with an outdoor Hydropool Tub (I think the model is a Serenity)

The tub was working fine but yesterday I topped the water up and then cleaned the hard cover with some water ready for my first try.... but then failure

The the pump trips the GFCI (or RCD as I we call it in the UK) every time I press it.

What's weird (for me anyway) is that the pump kicks in on it's own for the cleaning cycle every so often with no problems, it only trips and clicks when I try starting it from the control panel.

The blower is working fine as is the LCD lighting

My friend who is an electrical engineer said he would take a look but asked if I could find a circuit diagram or engineers manual.

Any help/links appreciated.

My first post so please be kind!!

Get a blow dryer and dry out everything that is in the vicinity of the tub that could possibly have gotten wet, including circuit board - pump wiring, etc.

You don't need a manual to troubleshoot gfci problems - you need dry.

I'm assuming of course the tub worked on high speed prior to you cleaning it...

Thanks for the reply,

The problem started 5 days ago so I would have thought any water would have dried out by now.

I posted the same question on another forum and the suggestion was that the relay in the control system for low speed is sticking in the on postion or the switch in the pump is sticking.

My friend who is an electrial engineer on production machines said he would take a look but he was interested in trying to get a circuit diagram and any info on possible causes.

A stuck relay or contact supplying power to the motor will not normally trip a gfci - that is, one that's stuck and it's getting both high and low simultaneously. It just draws more current and makes a loud racket.

If the moisture has become trapped it can remain there for quite a while. It only takes a single drop of water to trip a gfi.

Your motor has 4 wires going to it. A ground, a common, and a high and low speed line. You may want to try disconnecting the high speed line, then power it up and see if the problem repeats itself.

Hi,

I just found out it's actually the main switch which is tripping not the GFCI/RCD.

Does this make any difference in the diagnosis ?

Thanks

By "Main Switch" you mean breaker in your house or a sub panel?

If so, and it's not a GFCI breaker, yes, it makes a difference. If it's a GFCI breaker, then no, it wouldn't make a difference.

Turns out the motor has gone. It was working on low speed but high was tripping the main breaker. £300 to rewind the motor <img src=" title="Sad" /> It was over £650 for a new one from Hydropool in the UK though <img src=" title="Crying or Very sad" />
