Hot Springs Sovereign not heating

I just opened my spa for the season, but the water will not heat. I can feel that the pipes on the heater are warm, so that seems to be working, and the jets are working, so there doesn't seem to be a clog. No hot water is coming out of the heater return, though, but we filled the tub through the filter pipe, and cold water came out the heater return. The circulation pump gets very hot, too, but I don't hear any sound (should I)?

I tried cutting power to the spa and letting the circulation pump cool off as the manual suggests. But when I re-connected the power, the pump heated up again but the water did not. Everything, including the control panel, seems to be working properly.

What else can I try? Is there anywhere I need to check for clogs? Could the circulation pump be dead (it worked fine last season)?

Thanks!

Re: Hot Springs Sovereign not heating

The circ pumps don't always like to start up after they have been sitting unused for any long period of time. Honestly, try hitting it with a screw driver a few times on the side.

If it is getting really hot with no vibration then it sounds like it is not working at all, probably not an air bubble.

Is the power light flashing on the control panel?

What type of heater do you have in it? If the heater is not getting hot at least briefly when you reset the power then it may have tripped the high limit button as well.

What year Sovereign?

Re: Hot Springs Sovereign not heating

Hey Dan the Spa Man --

Thanks for the fast reply!! I will give the thing a couple of knocks on the side and see how that works. Right now, it does get hot without making any vibration, so it does seem like it's seized. The water in the heater is getting hot, so that appears to be working. No lights are flashing on the control panel.

The only odd thing is that the green "Ready" light comes on -- but only when I push the temp up past 100 or so. The water's ice cold, so I don't know what's happening there.

We bought the tub used, so I don't know for sure, but I think the unit is a 2001 or so. The heater is the one that came with the unit, I believe.

I really appreciate it.

Re: Hot Springs Sovereign not heating

When the ready light comes on is it solid or is it flashing? If it is on solid then the termistors are probably bad too.

Re: Hot Springs Sovereign not heating

It's only solid when it hits a certain temperature -- it doesn't stay on, otherwise. But this is the way it's always worked, even when the spa was working 100%. Is there any other way to test for the problem? What's the result if the thermisistors (sp?) are bad?

Re: Hot Springs Sovereign not heating

Greetings all-I have a Sovereign where the power lamp comes on only momentarily, then goes out. Not throwing breaker, and 120V appears intact. Any ideas for a "quick fix"? thx, jt
