| Hot Springs Spa-was hooked up wrong! UPDATED |
I think it is a Sovereign I, the s/n is I-34192. we bought the tub working and I had help unhooking everything. I, like an idiot,, assumed it was 220 like the previous tub we had. I ran 220 to the GFI box/switch that came with the tub. It ran for about 1/2 second and what I thought was a bad BBQ was actually smoke leaving the control box. I then took the box loose to read the 110V 40 amp right there inside the cover! " title="Confused" />
On the terminal strip there was one spot where the white wire connected (neutral), It looks as if there was what is left of a red in color surge suppressor to burn out before it cooks all the electrical..(I'm hoping). Any advice would be great! I will no longer think " I know what I'm doing" " title="Idea" /> |

Re: Hot Springs Spa-was hooked up wrong!
Yes, should be able to replace the surge protector, and be all set. It's a sovereign model, 1994, 110 volts 20amp. (I) is for sovereign, (3) is for the 3rd quarter, (4) is for 1994, the rest is production numbers.
The spa came with a 110v gfci cord end. In order to stay above board as far as the electric code goes, you must use the new style Watkins cord end and waterproof outlet. |

Re: Hot Springs Spa-was hooked up wrong!
Do you know where I can get the surge suppressor? It is about the size of a nickel covered in red colored rubber coating, it has two terminals that hooked to the terminal strip. |

Re: Hot Springs Spa-was hooked up wrong!
Update,
I changed the suppressor and GFCI plug. The tub is getting the correct voltage now, but will not come on. What should I try next, any ideas? I checked voltage at the terminal strip of the control panel. Relay? I was sure the surge suppressor would do the job..but it is still something wrong. The Hot Springs repairman that I talked to said as long as the suppressor burned off it did it's job. I may just let him come out an inspect the tub for any other issues. Anymore help would be greatly appreciated.. |

Re: Hot Springs Spa-was hooked up wrong! UPDATED
One more time, talked to the "service manager" at East Texas spas. He told me I must have cooked the entire control box. He said most likely you ruined the tub. " title="Evil or Very Mad" />
MY OWN stupid fault if it is..Could it be a slow blow fuse on the circuit board? I'm willing to try anything at this point to keep the repairman out of my back pocket. Again, the tub is getting 112V or so per the handy dandy digital meter. I'm pulling what little bit of hair I have left out...!! |

Re: Hot Springs Spa-was hooked up wrong! UPDATED
The procedure is to disconnect all bonding wires, unscrew light bulb, unplug heater, circ. pump, jet pump(if it unplugs) from the control box. Remove control panel and "drop" the box. Remove the back cover. Then the box can be diagnosed by plugging in the cord end. CAUTION: This should only be performed by someone who's experienced with troubleshooting LIVE electrical circuits. HIGHLY doubt the whole box is toast. Can't buy the whole box with its components anyways. Probably just a relay and/or some other component. |

Re: Hot Springs Spa-was hooked up wrong! UPDATED
Well, it was a very simple fix. I tested the circuits,,still scratching my head I checked the.50 amp slow blow fuses on the circuit board and viola! Radio Shack and 20 minutes later we were watching the water temp rise and jets doing their thing! Been two days and the water is just about perfect. THANKS A MILLION FOR THE ADVICE AND TIPS! If your ever down Texas way I owe you a steak! " title="Cool" /> |
