Inherited Hot tub! Where do I start?

Ok so my aunt just gave me this hot tub. Its a Hurricane from 1995. Obvious problem I noticed right off the bat was the heater element had a rusted and broken connection, so I've ordered a new coil and will replace it. What else should I check before I go wiring this up and turning it on for the first time, possibly lighting myself on fire? <img src=" title="Smile" /> I know extremely little about hot tubs, but this is a pneumatic control box and it looks surprisingly like a dryer, which I know alot of. Any relays or something I should check? Rocky

Hurricane

Hi Rocky, Hurricane Products is the controller used by Leisure Bay Industries. (LbI bought out Spa Tronics in 1991, and named the subsidiary Hurricane) It is not uncommon to need to replace the 3" verticle heater on those '95 units. Make sure you replace the Pressure Switch also. http://spapartsnet.com/Electric-Heaters... 0_3_1.html If your spaside controller ( where you turn it up, and on ) has raised buttons, then you have an LBI Euro Spaside Controller. With read-out for temperature, an LBI Digital Euro. I would expect to replace this control with a TDI ( Tridelta Industries ) Spaside Controller, now or in the future. http://spapartsnet.com/Control-Panels/T... 6_1_1.html http://spapartsnet.com/Control-Panels/2... 7_1_1.html If you replace the control, you also need the High Limit Switch replaced. http://spapartsnet.com/Electric-Heaters... 2_1_1.html I can't tell you how many times I've gone back for the T-Stat after replacing the 3" Verticle Heater <img src=ops:" title="Embarassed" />

Hi,

I have an old Hurricane spa too. The seal on the pump broke and the pump and controller box got wet and rusted. I fixed the seal and the controller box. The pressure switch is broken. I assume the pressure switch is their to make sure the small pump is circulating water through the heater. Can anyone confirm this is the usage of this sensor?

Thanks,

Marcel.

Pressure Switch

Hi Marcel, You are correct indeed. the pressure switch ( to be politicly correct ) makes sure that there is adequate flow to fire the heater. It differs from a flow switch in that it reads PSI instead of GPM to meter. The benefit is that it doesn't interfere with the stream of water, and it's detrement is that it reads pressure not flow. ( close a gate valve on discharge side, and "Dry Fire" the heater ) It is a crucial device, not to be bypassed. http://spapartsnet.com/Reference-Catalo... 4_0_1.html
