New Balboa VS510 giving me problems

Ok, so a couple months back I was given a 1999 Cal Spa with freeze damage. Cant beat the price... I tore out a ton of foam out and fixed the cracked and broken pipes. I decided not to chance it again, and go ahead and buy a new Balboa VS510 from a online supplier. Installation was super easy, all pumps hooked up with 4 pin amp connectors. New digital screen fit right in the old cal spa slot on tub. So today I go ahead and get electric hooked up, fill the tub. The spa pack goes into "priming mode" and the manual states to try and turn on the pumps to make sure to get all the air out. I try to turn the pumps on and all I get is a click. nothing happens, tried it a few more times, still only getting a click out of it. I double check everything, all seems well. Still only getting a click? Any help would be great. Im stumped

Re: New Balboa VS510 giving me problems

Most CalSpas use 230V pumps.

Are your jumpers on the circuit board in the right place?

Re: New Balboa VS510 giving me problems

Im looking for where the jumpers are supposed to go, I cant find if there wired for 120 or 230 from the factory. Anyone that has the 510 could chime in, I really didnt get any type of instructions with it when I bought the Balboa..... <img src=:" title="Question" />

Re: New Balboa VS510 giving me problems

I sell and have installed many. You have to go by the back cover diagram... something similar to this 501, http://spapartsnet.com/ppages/1498/insidecover.jpg But you must follow your diagram, not that one. Additionally, you need to check the voltage labels on your pumps to be sure they're 230v rated before changing anything. Did you connect this thing to 230V main power or 115?

Re: New Balboa VS510 giving me problems

It is hard wired into 230V. Does it come from the factory wired for 120 or 230? The diagram seems hard to understand on the back cover... Thanks for the advice so far

Re: New Balboa VS510 giving me problems

120... The motor/accessory common lines are always tied to neutral to prevent new installs from burning up components - so you have to change them. Take and post a digital photo of the board and I can help you fix this.

Re: New Balboa VS510 giving me problems

That is the back cover, im having a hard time getting a picture without any glare on the diagram.

Here is a picture of the board on the VS510SZ.

Im still scratching my head on what to do, if im looking at the diagram right, it looks like the J6 Pump 2 cant be switched over??

Re: New Balboa VS510 giving me problems

First off, you need to be absolutely certain that you have 230+ across L1 and L2. If you don't, then do not continue, your mains are wired wrong and you can fry the new control if it's not fixed.

Everything in that controller is set up for 115 volt operation, with the exception of the blower plug.

All of the white wires that go to the top left bank of disconnects (under the big fuse) mean that those plugs are set up for 115v. If you want anything (pump 1, pump 2) running on 230, the specific white wire must be moved down the the bank of disconnects underneath L2 power input - where the blower white wire is now.

The attached image shows how to make pump 2 - 230 volt operation.
You'll need to do the same for pump1.

That said, don't go any further until you can verify 230+ between L1 and L2 at the main power input. Also be sure your pumps are 230v rated.

Re: New Balboa VS510 giving me problems

Thanks for the help... I verified that all pumps are indeed 220V. I am going to check the input voltage at the line in to verify the 230+ on the power inputs. Im assuming that the pump, that is on the heater goes to the circulation hookup on the board. On the old cal spa there was a hookup for the heater pump?

Re: New Balboa VS510 giving me problems

If that's the single speed 1725 rpm small pump about 12" long, yes. But you need to be sure you set your dip switches correctly to ensure the system knows what to do with it.

Re: New Balboa VS510 giving me problems

Ok, stupid questions, Is there a owners manual for this thing or not? All I got was a laminated sheet of paper, that lists all the error codes for the screen..... DIP switches, jumper cables.... I sure wish I had a owners manual....

Re: New Balboa VS510 giving me problems

There are no owners manuals. Use the card and the sheet inside the cover.

Hmmm, everythign works great now, but it never turns on the small pump for the heater, so it goes into DR, and shuts down.... Still gives me the same click though. The pump just wont start, any ideas where to start?

Re: New Balboa VS510 giving me problems

Do the wires on the cords match up? Meaning, you may to rearrange them using a special tool.
