No Electricity to Bengal Heater

My water is cold! <img src=" title="Crying or Very sad" /> And I'm not getting any voltage to the heater. But I am getting voltage (120, 120, wire to ground) to the spa's board. I have a Watkins Bengal spa, Model M, Serial M3A1886. I have had it for about 9 years. The heater failed a few years ago, and I replaced it with a Watkins No-fault 240V6KW SSE-00-0H-0F. It has worked flawlessly otherwise since. I have made no changes since I put the new heater in several years ago. The green "Lim OK" LED is on constantly. The red "Htr On" LED does not come on. Well, playing with the jets on/off switch on the top of the spa once, I got the red "Htr On" switch to come on for a few minutes. When I went back 3 minutes later it was off and the heater was still cold. It does not come on when the pumps are on. Everything works except the heater. I have found no fuses except the one on the ozonator, haven't checked it, can't be it? No apparant burned wires. I jiggled all of the connectors (circuit breakers off!), and checked the screw-attached wires for tightness. I removed the filter, and ran the pump for a few minutes - no joy. The only ID I could find on the circuit board is "CL-AA" Because of a minor leak (low, on the circulation pump head) the spa has been off and drained for a few months. But I used it once since, recently (after re-fill), and it worked fine. I tightened one loose screw there, and the leak seems to be gone. Nothing done since then. There is almost certainly no heater reset button on the heater, but that's not the problem. Any ideas? Thanks! Chris

Re: No Electricity to Bengal Heater

Is the red power light flashing on the top contropl pad? The first thing I would check is that the small circulation pump is running. Pretty common for these to not start up properly after sitting empty for any amount of time.

Re: No Electricity to Bengal Heater

Ah, an interesting change since the last few (un-working) days... The red POWER light is on, solid red. Always has been.

But the green READY light has gone from OFF to slow flashing green. Blinking green. I am certain this wasn't happening a few days ago, when I first started troubleshooting - this light WAS off.

Re: No Electricity to Bengal Heater

A question betraying my ignorance: How do I check to see that the circulation pump is running?

Given that there are ozone bubbles coming out of the floor vent, I assume that it is.

I disconnected the hose on the "out" side of the heater. Good flow. But could this just be the weight of the water pushing past an inoperative pump?

Putting my hand on it, I detect no vibration. But maybe the pump is just that good (I work in a high end industrial environment, and have seen pumps this good).

edit: And the leak was on the large jet pump, not the small circ pump.
Thanks!

Chris

Re: No Electricity to Bengal Heater

Just looked at the spa again. Water still cold. BUT there is a vibration, and a slight electrical sound, plus some vibration, that leads me to believe that the small circulation pump is operating. And the green "READY" light on the top control panel is blinking again, and the red POWER light is solid on.

The green "Lim OK" light is on, solid, on the motherboard. The other two red lights (LED's) (including "HTR ON" are off.

Re: No Electricity to Bengal Heater

Usually that means that your control thermistor is bad. If they are original I would replace both the control and hi-limit thermistors. They screw into the end of the heater and have gray wires that hook into the side of the IQ control box. Use a 1/2" wrench to unscrew them.

Re: No Electricity to Bengal Heater

Dan - You da spa man! I got the new thermistors yesterday, put them in, and the heat came right on (once the breakers were switched back on). Soaked nicely last night, and the water's still hot today and the green ready light is solid. Problem fixed, I think. Thanks! <img src=" title="Very Happy" /> Chris
