Power at pump but won't spin or hum

Hi. I have a 220v heater/pump. The motor is getting power but won't do anything. I brought the old motor in and got a new one. It is doing the same thing. There is power from the heater box to the motor harness, 120volts in both of the red and black wires. What could be the problem?

The light is working fine as well as the blower. When I kick the power on i get a slight buzz from the heater box but I get no low or high pump. Its as if the pump isn't doing anything at all. But I know it has power.

Any suggestions? Thank-you

That's not how to measure 220v.

That may also mean you have a single 120v leg in both the wires.

Measure across the red and black for 220v

EDIT: Thanks Dr. Spa!

Read Dr. Spa's post too- if that's a two speed pump, red and black should never read 220v.
If you have 4 wires, red would be one speed, black the other, and white the "common" hot., so you would get 220v between the white and whichever speed is energized

Re: Power at pump but won't spin or hum

It this by chance a 2 speed pump?

What voltage is it rated for?

Re: Power at pump but won't spin or hum

it is a 2 speed pump and it is 220volts

Re: Power at pump but won't spin or hum

I measured across the red and black and have no power. What is the cause for this?

Thanks

Because you're testing for voltage from two spots on the same "hot" source.

As Dr. Spa pointed out, this is a two speed pump, you should never get 220v between the black and the red.

Imagine a single hot line. If you take your two meter leads and place them on two spots on the same hot wire, you'll get zero. If you measure (one at a time) from those two points to ground, you'll see 120volts at each point. This is why you can't measure for 220v by seeing if there's 120 volts at each leg.

Your spa uses two separate 120 lines for 220 power. It uses one of the 220v lines for a (120 volt)common, and the other (120 volt) to energize either high or low speed.

You should get 220v between a black OR red, and the white common wire. Your pump should have 4 wires. A high speed wire, a low speed wire, a common (always hot) wire, and a ground. .

Does this make sense?

Yes. That does make sense. What I tested is the red and white. I got no power. I then tested the black and white. Still no power.

Yes there are 4 wires on the control box outlet red/black/white/green. Why am I not getting 220volts between one of the hots and the neutral? Could the fuses in the control box or relays need to be replaced?

Re: Power at pump but won't spin or hum

Unplug the pump, and measure voltage from white (pump common, NOT neutral wire) to ground at the control box.

I got 120volts.

Re: Power at pump but won't spin or hum

Keeping the pump unplugged, energize high speed, and measure for voltage (on the control box side of the pump wiring) between red and ground, black and ground, red and white, and black and white. Please post results, and some pic's to be sure we're on the same page <img src=" title="Smile" />

Ok here are the results and pictures. Pump unplugged and engerized at high speed. Measured voltage at control box: Red & Ground = Nothing Black & Ground= 120volts Red & White= Nothing Black & White= Nothing http://i30.tinypic.com/nxuf44.jpg --> Side showing harness outlets http://i25.tinypic.com/2gydt3t.jpg --> Pump Harness http://i28.tinypic.com/2gx0mew.jpg --> Red to Ground (no voltage) http://i28.tinypic.com/2z65h5v.jpg --> Black to Ground (120volts) http://i32.tinypic.com/3524zuq.jpg --> Red to white (no voltage) http://i32.tinypic.com/34zlekh.jpg --> Black to White (no voltage)

Re: Power at pump but won't spin or hum

Good Job! You're testing perfectly.

Can you also take a pic of the control box? Look for any burnt wires or connections.

For whatever reason, you're getting the same phase of 120 for both the common and high speed. That shouldn't be happening.

Also, go ahead and test for voltage at the main terminal black (in the spa control box) between the two hots-possible just a bad breaker.

Re: Power at pump but won't spin or hum

Ok. The control box doesn't appear to have any burnt wires or anything abnormal. I've inspected it a lot. Got 120volts from black to white....and 120 volts from red to white. I hope I did it right. What should I do next? http://i25.tinypic.com/33c9q54.jpg --> control box http://i26.tinypic.com/2irkhli.jpg --> Black to White http://i29.tinypic.com/25ajj8o.jpg -->Red to White

Re: Power at pump but won't spin or hum

Good, but we need to test for 220v. Try going from black to red <img src=" title="Smile" /> Testing them one at a time could be the same 110v Also, with the voltage on, place one lead on each side a fuse. Do this for each fuses, and post the voltage results <img src=" title="Smile" />

Testing black to red I get no voltage. I also tested the (2) 30amp fuses on each end and got no power on either.

Re: Power at pump but won't spin or hum

The breaker may have 1/2 tripped, is bad, or the wiring is damaged.

Try turning the breaker off and on again, and test for voltage between black and red on the breaker.

I shut off breaker and turned it back on. No voltage between Red and Black at the main house breaker panel. This is a GE Slim 50 amp breaker I put in. Its smaller than the other 'standard' 240 breakers. There is 120 each if I go from ground to red...or ground to black. Here are the breakers. The spa 50amp slim is on the very bottom right side. http://i25.tinypic.com/35lwayx.jpg

Re: Power at pump but won't spin or hum

Yikes- you can't use a "slim" breaker- you're just getting two of the same 110v legs, not true 220v. Do you see the big 60 amp breaker on the left? You need a breaker like that one. It uses a 110v leg on each side of the main panel for 220v. The "slim" breaker just uses two of the same 110 volt lines- it's not really a 220v breaker, but two 50 amp 110 volt breakers.
