Cal spa low speed pump not working: swap with pump 2?

My spa is a 2002 Cal Spa 2200 series. It has 2 pumps, no circulation pump. Pump 1 is supposed to operate at low speed for heating and filtration cycles, but it doesn't. Filtration cycles aren't happening, and I can't force the low speed pump on via the Jets button. High speed works fine on both pumps.

Pump 2 is exactly the same pump, so I swapped their plugs on the control board. When powered back up, the spa began a filtration cycle immediately, as it's supposed to. So I reason that the board is okay, and something's wrong with pump 1.

My question is: what's next? I could swap the pumps, but the wet ends seem to have slightly different adapters (the connection at 90 degrees to the pump shaft is longer on one than the other), so would I have to remove them, leave the wet ends and only swap the pump bodies? Is that difficult?

Alternatively, are there things I can check on pump 1 to see if low speed can be restored, such as relays, contacts, plugged plumbing, etc.? Thanks.

Re: Cal spa low speed pump not working: swap with pump 2?

Pull the pump, take it to an electric motor repair shop and have them look at it. Or look at it yourself. You can also check to see if its getting energized by checking the voltage at the connector and operating the controls. I'd not be surprised if the low speed winding is shot due to constant use as a circulation pump for the past 8 years.

Re: Cal spa low speed pump not working: swap with pump 2?

Good idea, thanks. Is it hard (and even necessary?) to switch the wet ends? If not I'd likely switch the pumps while I'm at it. Since what's currently pump 2 appears to have low speed capability, I can use it as Pump 1. Then the old pump 1 can either be repaired and ready for future use, or simply operate as pump 2 since only high speed is required there.

Thanks again.

Re: Cal spa low speed pump not working: swap with pump 2?

Once you have the motor off removing the wet end is not a big deal. However, if I were going to all the trouble to remove a pump on a spa that old I would rebuild it. Rebuild parts like impeller, seals, and housing are available for some pumps, for others you have to buy the whole pump. Pulling the pu p is simply a matter of removing some bolts and unscrewing the impeller (left hand threads). You have to secure the motor shaft to apply the necessary torque, I used a rubber strap wrench to break it loose.

I'm not trying to jack your post, but none of you happen to have a plumbing diagram for this spa do you??

I doubt it but will look in the old documentation. If there's one there I'll try and scan it in...
