Oil in hot tub water

I have a really old Hot Springs Grandee. It appears the shaft seal has blown out of the cal circulator pump and the oil from the pump body has entered the water system. I have skimmed the oil from the water surface and am now looking for suggestions on how to remove the remaining residual oil from the plumbing and heater.
I am thinking of removing the filters, adding a cup or two of dishwasher soap and running the jet pumps for a half hour or so, then draining and refill. The heater and related hoses will have to be flushed separately.
What I am afraid of is if I just drain, clean the surfaces and refill, the oil will still be in the system.
Anybody got any ideas?

Re: Oil in hot tub water

I would flush the heater and hoses separately and then just refill and use something like a scumbug, which is just a foam ball that floats on the surface and soaks up oil. If you put detergent in, your next post will be how to get residual foaming out of the tub. <img src=" title="Very Happy" /> Most of the oil in the main system should be gone or in your filter now, having circulated and flowed to the top. Flushing the stuff that wasn't circulated (heater line) should get the majority of the remainder out and a scumbug will get the incidental floaters.

Re: Oil in hot tub water

spishex,
thanks for the quick response.
I am currently waiting for the new pump which should be here in the next couple of days. Right now I have 5 oil absorbs floating on what is left of the water to try to soak up the left over oil. When the new pump gets here I will flush the rest of the system and drain, clean, install the new pump and refill. If I leave the tub empty for more than a few hours the jet pump seals will leak so have to complete the clean and refill in a hurry.
The really strange thing is the oil skim on the surface was kind of moldy and had formed kind of a yellowish skin. Hard to believe the residual chlorine didn't kill it. I was under the impression that Calvert pumps were filled with mineral oil and wonder how that could attract mold.
