| pump starts on low speed but then goes to high...why? |
ok..I got the hot tub for free...shell was good, plumbing is good, pump and motor was bad.
I replaced the pump and motor with new ones.
The motor is two speed and the tub is wired with a 60 amp sub panel with GFI breaker -6awg to the controller.
I dont know the brand of the tub or the age. The controller says Spa Builders Support Electronic Controls.
There is a toggle button on the controller inside the tub that has three positions:
continuous or Timer Clock or Thermistat
on the top side controller there is a turn knob to adjust heat - and three buttons; jet - light - aux. The heater works.
The problem is that the pump only works on high speed. When I press the jet button on the top side controls...the pump toggles between high speed and off...nothing else.
If I put the toggle on any of the three toggle positions then press the jet button..the motor spins only on high. this is with the thermostat turned all the way off or all the way on.
If the jet is off and I put the toggle in any position and turn the heat on high...nothing happens. I do hear and see (took panel off) the relay kick in for the heat...but no pump unless I hit the jet button.
I reversed the red and black hot wires at the pump (thinking I had high and low switched). When I hit the jet button now, the motor starts to spin, then stops...I hear a relay clicking as it happens in about 1/2 sec intervals. Its as if its detecting an error right away and clicks off then starts again. When I reverse the wires again, it runs only on high.
When the tub has been idle overnight and I hit the jet button, the motor runs at low speed for about three minutes, then back to the high speed problem.
Questions I have:
1) if I have a bad relay in the controller..why doesnt the low speed work when I reverse the wires and the high speed cycle on and off instead since it would be on the bad relay after reversing?
2) why does the high speed, when working, start off at low speed when the motor is cold? is this normal?
3) And when all is working right, can someone tell me how to use the controls...I have looked all over the internet and cant find a directions document.
Thanks in advance all for your help! |
