Lengordon controller w/ constantly flashing display

Got a len gordon digital side controller (two pneumatic buttons and two digital temp adjuster buttons) with digital readout on temp. It is connected to a unitedspas 3A controller/heater.

The readout on the side controller just flashes (does not display a temperature) until I hit the up or down arrow buttons for raising the temperature and then it momentarily shows the temp setting (but not the actual spa temperature). When I hit either the up or down temp buttons the heater clicks on then back off after about a second.
Any ideas on what is causing this?

Not sure if this is pertinent...
I noticed that the controller had a temperature sending unit attached to it by ~6ft leads (two very small wires). These wires have been cut in in the middle sometime in the past and reattached for someunknown reason. This sending unit was just thrown over the side of the tub into the water...doesn't really look like the proper way to install it. If this temp sending unit is bad will the controller not know what temp the tub is at and just keep shutting off the heater?

Is there a way to test the controller and/or the temp sending unit?

Thank you.

PS The pump works fine and can be turned on/off via the pneumatic button on the side controll.

The flashing display indicates a bad temperature sensor on the spa side, if the wire has again been cut or crimped or slipped off the splicing then it is going to give that display. You can attempt to cut and re-splice in the wires but even if that works it will be a short term fix, you will eventually need to buy a new spa control.

The probe hanging into the spa is not the "proper" way to install the probe though it will work, it just looks bad. Really what should be done is a dry-well should be drilled into the pvc somewhere in the lines.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the quick response and good info.

That is a really good price there.

PS What do the discount levels mean or represent?
