| GFCI Tripping Immediately |
Hello,
I pray someone can help me, I purchased a used hot tub. The original owner said he had replaced the heater because it kept tripping his GFCI but that did not stop the problem and that a tech told him it was likely the pump. I got it home and replaced the Motor on the pump (I were told it was likely the motor and not the pump itself). I had a electrician come in and wire up the GFCI box (50 amp)
Turned it on, and it did not trip but made a huge crackling sound and burned out one of the relays. Electrician told me that it was the control box that was the problem. So after saving up for 2 months I purchased a new control box and heater. Got it installed last night........turned it on and bam it is kicking the GFCI box again.
I am hoping someone might be able to help me, I am a single mother who suffers from serious arthritis and can not afford to keep buying parts for this. It has a brand new Motor for the pump, and a brand new heater and control box. Is there something I am missing? Or someway to tell what it is? I don't know where to go from here and can not afford to keep buying new parts that do not help.
Thank you in advance to anyone who may be able to help. I do not know the name of the spa, as it does not say anywhere on it. I do know it is at least 12 years old. I have this hooked up on a 50 amp spa box. I have a 50 amp breaker in my inside house wired up at 6/3 and the 10 ga wire going from the spa box to the hot tub. I will be online most of the day and can answer any questions needed. I can take pictures of anything needed as well.
Thank You So Much! |

Re: GFCI Tripping Immediately
Wow, I'd love to be able to help you. Are you sure there's nothing on the spa to identify the make/model?
This is just a wild guess but some spa's (Sundance and Jacuzzi for example) can be configured for 60A operation via a jumper in the control box, instead of the factory default 50A. If yours is configured for 60A, and you've got it on a 50A circuit, then you're gonna trip the GFCI every time you try and run both pumps and the heater at the same time.
Does the GFCI trip as soon as you turn both pumps on? Do you only have one pump? What about if you leave the pump(s) off - will the heater operate without tripping the GFCI? |

Re: GFCI Tripping Immediately
Hi,
Thank you so much for trying!
This only has one pump, I know it used to work on the 50 Amp as that is what the original owner had it on. Would that make a difference? I now have a brand new control box, and it is designed for the wiring I have as well. I did try removing each component one at a time to see if it would stay on but that did not work. Even with everything unplugged it still kicked??
I checked every where on this tub, it has no make or model lol. Even the original owner had no clue what make it was. " title="Crying or Very sad" />
Thanks Again! |

Re: GFCI Tripping Immediately
Wish I could help you further, but have to admit I'm at a loss. My suspicion is that there's a fundamental fault on your wiring somewhere, but I guess the electrician would have spotted that? The only other thing I can think of is that some 230v tubs require 3 wires (2 hot and a ground), and all others require 4 wires (2 hot, ground and neutral). It has been known for electricians who are not used to wiring tubs to try and wire a 3 wire tub with 4 wires. |

Re: GFCI Tripping Immediately
Hi,
Thanks, I ended up paying a hot tub tech to come and look at it. It was the pump motor I just purchased! Apparently some of these are just bad off the rack......mine is the problem, so I got to take it off and take it back for a new one.
Thanks! |
