| GFI tripping intermittently but seems to be load related |
GFI in house trips intermittently but seems to occur when tub is heating and pump comes on at the same time.
It's a 2004 Beachcomber tub with hushpump. GFI circuit breaker is 40 amp 220 v Federal Pioneer in house.
Problem can not occur for 2 months and then might occur twice in the same week, so not sure it's always related to the pump and heater load. We do get a lot of rain...living in the northwest, but I've checked and the pump and heater area are bone dry...have to keep chasing spiders out. Had Beachcomber check it out about 6 months after installation. Pump was replaced and no tripping for about 3 months. then intermittent again. could almost live with the problem except I'm concerned that temperature may drop below freezing when we're not here...then big problem.
no other GFI circuit breakers tripping at panel so appears localized to the hottub.
current opinion amongst team of amateur sleuths (altho' it includes the electrician that installed circuit breaker) is that the gfi circuit breaker is faulty. they're expensive to replace so have been reluctant to rush out and buy one to see if that's the solution..about $220 in Canada. also, thought of bumping it up to 50 amp, as it may not be able to handle surge of pump? which hottub manufacturer was o.k. with in terms of protecting equipment. but Federal Pioneer don't manufacture 50 amp gfi.
any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome. thanks. |

Well first off I'd leave the spiders be... they eat the other bugs that rodents like to eat... which keeps the food chain at a minimum underneath the spa.
2 things you may want to do....
1. Open up breaker panel and CRANK DOWN on the screws for the main gfci breaker (breaker turned off of course).
2. Unplug the ozonator.
#----------------------------
Then wait to see if it repeats again.
If not, then plug in ozonator again.
Watch and wait...
If it trips then replace the ozonator.
This nuisance tripping can be the death of your wallet.
You may want to go ahead and purchase a digital vom that has a resistance measurement capability above 2 meg-ohms. You can use this to find marginal faults to ground at the tub. I'd do the above 1 and 2, get a meter and do some testing. |
