GFI trips..Shocked from water..

I just installed a tub which is 8 years old. My parents had it running since brand new. It was service by the company whom they had purchased it from always.
It is wired exactly the same way it was before but before I inherited it, it tripped a few times in its old setting.

I assummed it to be the element which I replaced with a new one, but now, the GFI will not even engage..
The last i had it running, it cycled fine for an hour, the jets finished and i went to put my hand in the water and as soon as i touched it, I felt a shock from the water and the GFI tripped.
I inspected the element, which seems to be fine..
I unplugged the pump and was then able to engage the GFI and make the tub power up. As soon as I tried plugging in the pump, the GFI trips.
I inspected any wiring underneath as well for any loose or exposed conections, which there seems to be none..
All directions point to the Pump, but could this cause the shock I experienced from the water???

I have always wanted to straighten my hair anyways...
Thanks for your help in advance..
Paul..

Re: GFI trips..Shocked from water..

You'll need to disconnect components one at a time. And retest. Also, look for any burnt/chaffed wires. Good luck <img src=" title="Smile" />

Re: GFI trips..Shocked from water..

I took a good look for any broken or burnt wires, which there appears to be none.
I may have narrowed it down to the pump. The breaker tripped even with the ozonator disconected. The element is brand new. when the pump runs, the gfi seems to trip.
Could the pump cause the shock in the water??
Thank you for the reply..

Re: GFI trips..Shocked from water..

I checked the pump and ran it on it own and it ran for a hour without issue..
I have tested each individually which indicates to me that all accesories are working fine..
Could this be a ground issue?
How would in check?

Re: GFI trips..Shocked from water..

I just got a minor shock myself! <img src=" title="Shocked" /> I was in the hot tub (10-15 year old Cal Spa) earlier tonight, but the water wasn't warm enough yet. I let it keep heating and figured I'd just have an early morning simmer tomorrow. A little while later (I've got insomnia tonight), I went out to check the temperature. I saw it had climbed a couple of degrees, and I went below deck to verify the thermostat setting. Then, while standing on the ground in bare feet, I reached and put my fingers into the water (I'm not even sure what prompted me to do this). My hand felt funny, I withdrew in a second, and then I noticed tingling in my hand and forearm. The GFCI didn't trip (though I recently tested it successfully), but it was obviously a very minor zap. But, now I'm a bit afraid of it. Was it because I was standing on the ground (stepping stones on my lawn) in bare feet? Would it have happened if I'd just climbed in normally from the deck? Or if I'd been wearing shoes? And finally, is there a good way to test if the water is still electrified WITHOUT me reaching in again like a moron?? Please help. Thanks.

Re: GFI trips..Shocked from water..

If your getting a shock or tingle you got an issue going on. could be a number of things, I would do some searchs on this forum, loads of threads with good info about this sort of thing <img src=" title="Smile" />

Did you try disconnecting the wires to the heater and trying it then? From what you said the only change you made was the heater element right? then you noticed this problem? no other changes?
