No power/spa won't turn on

I have a Vita Spa Duet model# PTDULD150NG that's about 7 years old. I went to add chemicals to it the other day and it was off - no lights on the panel. I hit the reset button on the plug to the wall outlet a couple times and it came back on. Several hours later I checked it and it was off again and I haven't been able to get it to come on since.

It's on a 20amp circuit by itself and the breaker did not trip. If I plug something else in to the outlet it works fine. I am getting nothing on the display at all. I think the pump may have died but was wondering if there is a way to reset it if it just froze up or something. Or if there is something else I can try to troubleshoot what's going on.

So you're saying the reset button on the plug is tripping out?

(again?)

I'm not sure... there is a window on the plug that is clear. When I plug it in, it turns red. When I depress the reset button it's clear but goes to red when I release it. The rest button is always in the "out" position. The Test button doesn't seem to do anything and the lights on the hot tub panel never come on as if it's getting no power.

One of the prongs on the plug is brown in color. I live near the beach and thought it might be rust. Could the plug have burnt out or something?

These things turn to junk after a few years.

My solution is always to go to Home Depot, get a 15 or 20 amp GFCI plug, and install it in place of the wall outlet.

Then cut off the dead gfci plug thing you've been playing with and put a standard 15 or 20 amp commercial grade plug on the end of the cord.

The entire exercise should cost you less than 30 bucks. You can get a weatherproof enclosure for the entire thing for an additional 10 and have a really good installation.

So do you think it's probably not the pump then?

May or may not be.
I don't trust gfci plug ins as far as I can throw them once they've gotten more than a couple of years old. I always replace that single point of failure first, then start over the troubleshooting process. That one you've got obviously sounds like it's dead.

I'll give it a shot, or find someone that will - not much of an electrical person but we'll see! Thanks!

$22 later and everything seems to be working great! Not bad for a mechanical type, huh? <img src=" title="Smile" /> I'm glad I found this site. Now if it was just cool enough to go in the spa or warm enough to go in the pool, I'd have it made! Thanks so much for your help! -Sandy
