Ozone generator replaced now GFI trips on high jets

Coleman 455, year 2000
220 Volt unit
110 Volt Ozonator
Panel Balboa 400-CA 97 S DLX Millenium

This tub generates ozone when Pump 1 is running on low. The bulb burnt out on the old ozone generating unit and was not replaceable. I replaced the old ozonator with a new unit. It operates properly, generating ozone, until I turn the Pump 1 jets to high. Then the GFI trips.

If I disconnect the new ozonator everything works as it should. Reconnect, it runs until jets are put on high and GFI blows.

I'm thinking the new unit is defective but would entertain other ideas. Thanks.

1. Pull the hose from the ozonator and check to see if you're getting any water there.
2. Did you use the standard plug on the ozonator? or did you have to change any internal wiring to get it to work?
3. Does it trip the instant you push the jets button? Or does the pump run for a second or two or longer, then it trips?

1. No water getting to the unit. I mounted the unit output above the water line and put a loop with the tubing so I didn't expect any to be there.

2. Yes. The spa pack side has a 4 pin AMP receptacle with black/white/blank/green. The new unit is labelled 110/220V and also had a 4 pin AMP plug but that one is black/red/white/green.

3. It instantly trips.

Thank you.

John

You put ALL 4 pins in that ozone plug?

Posted by on 2007-11-30 20:59:28. Metro Atlanta, Georgia Region (11813)

I ordered the new ozone unit with a 4 pin AMP plug. I called the seller, gave them my spa information, and was told it was 'plug and play'.

If that's what you meant, I'm not sure I understood your question.

Thanks.

Your previous ozone generator, was a 3 pin.

Was it a 115 or 230 volt unit?

You are not supposed to connect all 4 wires to the ozonator.

Use, White and Black and green for 115 - Red is not connected.

Red, Black and green for 230 - White is not connected.

No, the previous ozonator was a 4 pin. A 3 pin AMP connector will not connect to a 4 pin AMP connector. One of the pins on both the panel side and the old ozonator was blank, or empty.

I did change the pin configuration to match the panel side, but the behavior remains the same, GFI trips instantly when high jets are pressed on pump 1.

Thanks.

How many pins are utilized? All 4??? That's odd <img src=" title="Confused" />

Posted by on 2007-12-01 09:53:37. SW Florida (11824)

I assume Balboa (Control Panel maker) set it up so it could be used for either 110 or 220.

The power side uses three of the four with one empty. The old ozonator was the same. Both Black White Green and Blank. The new unit has a Red to supply the 220, and is marked as both 110 and 220 (actually 120 and 240).

By 'pins', I didn't imply 'sockets'. http://spapartsnet.com/Ozone-Generators... 7_1_1.html The balboa generator has 4 pins supplied with a 4 socket amp connector. Only 3 of them are supposed to be used. That said, you didn't respond as to whether or not your previous ozonator was 115 or 230. But for the moment I'll assume the former since that was in your original post - but in the interim, it would be good to at least double check. Only thing I can think is that something is causing a ground fault within the ozonator when power is removed. Normally when you turn the jets on, the ozonator is supposed to power off.

Pageup,

Many thanks for your help.

The spa pack is Balboa, the tub came with a Prozone ozonator which I was replacing with a Clarathon, primarily because the bulb can be replaced. (I didn't know if it was acceptable to name brands on this board, some boards don't like that)

The Prozone was 115 volts, four sockets in the AMP plug but only three pins.

I like the Balboa ozonator you linked. Do you know if the lamp can be replaced in this unit?

Thanks again.

Unfortunately no it cannot.

That said, for years I've preferred the non-replaceable versions simply because after 5,6,7 years of use - its just as well to replace the ballast and the supporting circuitry that gets just as old and as used as the bulb.

Okay, thanks. That makes sense now that you mention it.

Unless there is something for me to actually test, I'm going to have to assume I got a bad unit and return it.

It sounds as though the pin configuration is incorrect.

I'd double check before returning it.

Swine,

I did reconfigure the AMP plug but that didn't change the behavior.

I'm wondering if this could be some type of a relay issue, but I'm going to eliminate the ozone unit as the culprit first.

Thanks.

Are you using all 4 pins on the O3 side?

Posted by on 2007-12-04 09:16:58. SW Florida (11883)

No, only Black, White, Green.

Posted by on 2007-12-04 16:41:25. SE Pennsylvania (11896)

rgr that, Good luck!

Posted by on 2007-12-04 20:12:59. SW Florida (11899)

Okay new info, sorry for the delay I had back surgery. Remember this O3 generator is only supposed to operate on low jets. If I take my voltmeter to the supply side, I'm getting the following:

Pins Low jet off Low jet low Low jet high

Green/
White 120 120 120

Green/
Black 120 120 120

This can't possibly be right, but I've double and triple checked them. The relays on the board are visually working properly, eg I see them open and close. I don't know how to proceed, I expected the relays to be controlling voltage to the O3 unit.

Posted by on 2007-12-23 16:08:21. SE Pennsylvania (12123)

Why would I be reading 120 volts at the O3 power plug with Pump 1 off, low, or high?

Anyone?
