| Adhesive for piece under motor |
I have a tub built by Keys Backyard in TX. I purchased it through Costco in April 2007. There is a vibration problem that I have traced to the piece under the motor. For convenience sake, I will refer to this piece of wood as "the deck", or "decking". It is approx. 14" by 18" and 5/8" or 3/4" thick. It is plywood. This deck is screwed into the top of the 2x4 framing joists. These joists rest on the slab. During construction, however, the deck was only screwed off on the edge closest to the outside or cabinet. This has allowed the opposite or inside edge of the deck to warp up over an eighth of an inch, perhaps over a quarter inch. When the motor is on, the deck vibrates and leads to the creation of obnoxious and loud noises. The company has agreed to come out and fix the problem. How should this fix be accomplished?
The way I see it, the deck and everything on the deck must be removed. A new piece of decking must be cut, and installed with an adhesive as well as screws every 8 inches. My main question is what kind of adhesive? Over time, a construction adhesive such as Liquid Nails might crack and delaminate. Would it be better to put a 100% silicone caulk as it will remain pliable and resilant? Or is there another adhesive that would be best?
Thank You
Dan Campbell

IMO, you're really going overboard.
Wood warps in this environment - I wouldn't have wasted the time with the service call - simply put a couple of deck screws in the end to pull it back down and be done with it. An eighth of an inch warp is absolutely nothing - Now if we were talking about an INCH, then yeah, it might be a good time to replace the wood.
Glue, screw specs, new wood and all that is just too much for a simple resonant vibration problem with such small warpage.
Shoot a couple of screws in the platform and be done with it. |
