| Couple of issues, not sure of the cause. Hail mary time... |
Hi There,
Glad you have this site!
Here's the description of the setup before I post the issue(s):
We bought this house in May, it came with a blue hot tub - about 300 Gallons maybe? Can't find a brand/model anywhere. All I can see in the cabinet is a Hurricane controller. They call it the Pinnacle Model B Pak on this site:
http://www.affordablespas.com/equip.htm
It looks like it has two pumps. The big one has a sticker (peeling off) which says "Two Speed" on it.
There are four big white "Air buttons" on top. One turns on the light.
The hot tub worked fine in the summer, but it was so hot outside we barely used it. I meant to drain/refill it before winter but to be honest I was sorta intimidated with the task having never owned a hot tub and kept putting it off. We stopped using it because it was someone else's soup in there and my wife didn't like the idea of sitting in someone elses juice.
Every now and then I'd just listen to make sure the heater would kick on automatically and just left it alone.
So, it's been freezing cold here in Denver for the last month or two and I finally got all the chemicals and stuff to drain/refill it when it finally gets above 40F.
Now, if you're still reading, here are the issues. I just noticed all of this tonight.
1. I hear the heater humming, then it gets loud then it gets quiet. It never kicks on the pump.
2. Only one of the air buttons on top works now. When I push it, one of the jets on the side starts shooting out water. The water level is a bit low so I know it's shooting water.
- does that mean the pump(s) aren't locked up?
3. The light on the heater/controller box never comes on. The heater controller box makes a continuous low, quiet hum.
4. None of the lights come on the controller (is that what the big box with the knobs and stuff is called?)
5. The water is warmis - around 80F. I'm afraid it may be cooling off though. Yikes.
6. The big pump is really warm, almost hot, but again, that one jet shoots water, so...
7. There are no leaks. None of the pipes are overly cold. They're a bit chilly but not freezing cold.
8. All of the valves seem to be open.
9. Pushing the 'reset' button just shuts everything off until I release it. The Hi Limit trip button is not popped out.
So, I'm a fairly mechanical guy - comfortable working on cars, remodeled some rooms in the house, built my own space shuttle. Stuff like that, but I've never owned a hot tub and am not sure where to begin troubleshooting this.
Could the fact that the water is low be causing the heater pump system not to come on? I'd refill the hot tub but the hose was frozen when I got home and is currently thawing in the garage. The water isn't very low. Only the one jet that is shooting water is above the water line all of the others are below. I'm not sure where the 'return' water intake is.
Thanks very much for any and all help. It's amazing to be able to find a forum like this online where one can get help from knowledgable people. I usually stick to forums where I can be the one answering questions. Tried to give as much info as possible to explain the situation.
Thanks again!!!

The motor that feels hot, is that actually doing the humming? Based on what you have written I would venture a guess that the hot motor is actually locked up causing the humming, and lack of heat (due to no water flow through that pump) |
