| FLO/pump problem |
SPA: Unknown age - unknown brand - 2 pumps (1- 2speed, 1- 1speed), 220v, Balboa instrument panel
History: (short version)
I replaced the 2 speed pump (I don't remember why - that's part of the long story!) It worked fine for about a year, then I started getting FLO errors... no heat, the 2speed pump was not working... checked it out, leaking seal had locked up the impeller... cleaned and freed the impeller, then I accidentally broke the housing to the wet end putting it back together " title="Sad" /> ... so replaced the wet end, no leaks, reinstalled the pump (while I had it out, before I did anything to it - I put power on it real quick to see that the motor was not ruined - powered up good!)
Now, I still get the FLO error - the pump is still not working... the shaft spins freely...
I checked the Flow sensor - no continuity - when I override it with a jumper between the wires, the FLO message stops. So I assume this is functioning properly? Right?
The switches are clicking on when I push the jets button... so I checked the power to the pump... 244v (is that right for a 220 pump?) But, I thought that as the switches were cycled - low, hi, off - that voltage would change, for 'off' at least? It was continuously 244v - my guess is that since the water is 59degrees, it is set to pump continuously until the water heats up... overriding the jet switches? (I can't see the back of the pump to know if I'm testing hi speed or low - I am assuming, it's high - which also makes me wonder... " title="Confused" /> )
I have tried to spin the shaft to kick start the motor... to no avail... there is no humming or clicking from the pump at all...
I'm thinking that something is not wired tight at the pump - but I can't see it when it's in the spa, and my husband has my big pliers at work right now, so I can't remove it to check it out...
Does this sound right? A connection knocked loose when reinstalling it all...? is there anything else you think I should check? This is getting real frustrating! We'll have to drain it and blow out the lines if I can't get it running soon...
Why is this one pump always giving us problems? (I am planning on blowing out it's supply line real good once I get it out again)
Are we sure that we have the right pump for our electrical set-up (the original one was destroyed in a fire - the long story - and we couldn't be 100% we were getting a compatible replacement - but it did work well untill the seal leaked)
Thanks... let me know if you need more info! I love you guys, I've gotten so much help from you! THANK YOU! |

OK - I found a wrench - and got the pump out - I'm getting nothing when I hook it up to power... right to the terminals - (now, this is 110v household current I'm hooking it to), did I fry something somehow/sometime?
How/what can I test for now -???
This pump is a year old!!! Do I need a new one or chan this be repaired? |

By chance is the bottom terminal the common for both speeds? It looks like it has seen moisture, as it is heavily corroded. It is very possible your pump motor is bad. |

No, I don't thinks so... it was:
Terminal 2 - white
Terminal 3 - red
Terminal 4 - black
From what I have read - white is common...
If I shorted something by wiring it wrong - what would it be?
When it didn't work - I thought I had it wired wrong (it had been some time since I had to order the new wet end and all - I lost my notes) and tried a couple of times (before I just followed the wires from the circuit board to the pump.)
If I remove the housing will that tell me more - or is it just shot?
Thanks |

I just want to be sure I am following correctly
You replaced the wet end on this motor, which ran before you removed it, but since you removed it you lost your notes and guessed where the wires are to go, but now it does not run. Is this right? |

Pretty much - I guess - this has been an ongoing, often interupted, process...
I know where the wires go now - the terminals came with the colored wires as in the other post...
I have labeled the wires to it, now too, easily following them from the control panel...
I am not 100% certain - but there is a chance that at one time, I may have miswired it... (and blew the breaker???) I can't remember, I have been messing with it off and on for 6 months now - I'll get frustrated and quit for a while... or order a part, and have to wait for a while... etc...
So, let's assume that at one time I hooked up the white and red wires to the #3 & #4 terminal (assuming white is common and belongs on the #2 terminal) what would that do to my motor? |

what terminals came with what wires in what other post? I am having a real hard time following what you are trying to tell me |

Terminal 2 - white
Terminal 3 - red
Terminal 4 - black
This is how the pump was set up |

ahh good thing you found your notes. Hooking up the pump incorrectly by placing the neutral/common to the opposite speed terminal would normally blow the circuit breaker before damaging the pump, but there is always the chance. If you have the pump hooked up correctly and have the proper voltage to the motor, and it still does not run, your motor is defective. |

" title="Idea" /> AH HA!!! I found it - there is a overheat cut-out device inside the motor! It has a 'filament' type fuse wire built in that burned out...
Jumped it to see if that was the problem - now it is working just fine! Quiet and smooth - just like new!
I'll pick up a replacement tomorrow & I'll be back in 'hot water' by tomorrow night!
