Older Model Hot Springs Hot Tub

A few months ago I moved into a house with an older model hot tub in the back yard. It was up and running with no problems and the heater had just been replaced. A month ago I turned the power to it off and drained it then refilled it making sure the thermostat was off, and turned the jets on to cycle out any air pockets before turning the thermostat back on. After having done so the tub ran fine. A few weeks later I turned on the light and it wouldn't turn back off and tonight when I went out to sit in it the water was on the cool side and the light was off and when I tried to turn on the jets nothing happened, so I went inside to the circuit breaker box to check and see if maybe the circuit breaker had tripped. Well it hadn't tripped and apparently there is no power to the tub. Any ideas on what is causing this?

Thanks

Re: Older Model Hot Springs Hot Tub

Check the power at the tub. There may be a separate breaker between the tub and the main panel.

Re: Older Model Hot Springs Hot Tub

I actually checked both breaker boxes the one to the main house and the one to just the hot tub, and neither one was tripped. When I checked under the access panel just now on the black unit there are two reset buttons one for the tub and one for the heater. The one for the tub was sticking out further and I pushed it in and the power came on to the tub, however I still could not get the illumination light to turn off. Could that cause things to over heat and having had to press in the reset button be an indicator of something seriously wrong?

Re: Older Model Hot Springs Hot Tub

Do you have a dial for the light right beside your thermostat? It may just be that the switch for it has gone bad or the plastic on the knob is stripped from turning it too far one way or the other. You can take the front panel with the buttons and knobs off pretty easily, just be careful with those plastic screws. Once you've got it off you'll see the stems for the thermostat and light control.

As for the tub reset button, that probe should be in the same thermowell as the thermostat bulb and should only trip if the tub gets too hot. You'll need to check the water temperature and make sure it is not going out of control. You might have a bad reset switch, or you might have a bad thermostat that is overheating the water. The bulb is probably not the culprit, but maybe. You could always replace it with a 25w for the time being just to make sure.

Re: Older Model Hot Springs Hot Tub

Okay I took the front panel off and the insides of the knob were fine so I believe the control for it has gone bad. And also since hitting the reset button I've noticed little air bubbles coming from the circulation hole...the temp of the water was at about 88 when I hit the reset button and is now at 98, so am unsure if that is a problem yet.

Re: Older Model Hot Springs Hot Tub

I'm not sure if the light is powered directly from that switch or if it goes through a relay. It could be that a relay is getting stuck, so before you replace the light switch you'll want to check it with an ohm meter.

Looks like the temp is under control. Have you got your thermostat all the way up? Go ahead and check what the upper limit of it's range is and see if the reset switch holds.
