| Please help erratic operation |
Hi all, Sorry this will be so long but i'm going to try and provide as much information as possible.
I have aquired a used (approx 1999) model charisma spa that uses a hydroquip pump and HT600 unit. It is 220v with a 50amp gfci disconnect. 2 hots/nuetral/and ground. The digital thermostat was bad when i got it so i have replaced that. Here is the problem i'm having
upon turning on power the low speed of the pump turns on. There is a annoying chatter/hum coming from the control box (sounds like a very loud timer, but it is not the timer)the low speed will run for roughly 20 seconds then the complete unit shuts down. about 15-20 seconds later it will start up agian. If you attempt to turn the jets on the pump will surge and click every second or 2 for a few cycles then shut down. 15-20 seconds later you hear a light click and it starts up agian.
the light works very speraticly once it's on it stays on, but rather it turns on or not is the question. It will shut down without fail everytime.
I can hear the audiable click from the air switches for both jets and lights and the pump will respond to the jet button each time, and the lights turn off each time. So i'm suspecting a relay maybee?
There is a sensor with 2 wires in the side of the steps someone has replaced that unit and left the wires disconnected and someone has also replaced a part that i think controls the light as evident by the butt connectors crimped on the wires. I have included pics of these parts. the sensor in the side of the step
the wire from that sensor which ends up near the thermo stat
the box i belive to have been replaced for the light is on top second from the left
 the rest of the box.
if anyone has any information i would greatly appreciate it. I will most likely have a spa tech do the work unless it turns out to be something very simple. I'm just trying to be an informed consumer before i place the call.
thanks in advance. |

Re: Please help erratic operation
The sensor in the steps is a temp sensor. The box is the 12v transformer for your lights.
The first step would be to test the incoming service, especially the neutral line. Maybe the pack is convertible and still set up for 120v? |

Re: Please help erratic operation
thank you. How do i test the neutral, and what should i see? on the 2 hots i have 120v each and 220v together. when the pump runs on the leads going to the pump i have 120v and when the jets cycle i get 220v on/off as it cycles. ( assume low this is correct? low speed 120 high speed 220?)
The temp sonsor is what i was thinking i belive that has been replaced with a probe now down near the heater (you can see part of it coiled up near the reset button in the box).
although there are componets that are 110v in the unit i do not belive it is convertable as the pump is 220v and the box is labeled as 240.
thank you for your help |

Re: Please help erratic operation
Your pump should have four wires: ground, common (white, 120v all the time), high and low (usually black and red). It will always have 240 to it when it is on. 120v on the common line + 120v on the high or low speed wire.
If it has enough wire, run the temp sensor to where the old one is. The thermowell in the side of the tub will be more accurate than the heater housing.
Your neutral line should have continuity to ground and 120v to each hot line. |

Re: Please help erratic operation
Thanks agian from the incoming wires into the box (before any electrical componets of the box) i have 220v across the black and red and 120v from nuetral to each.
from the lead going out of the box to the pump when the pump is running i get 120 from the red or black (depening on which speed i have it on)and 120v from nuetral to ground or nuetral to either red or black(depening on which speed it on) I do not get a 220v reading from any combination of wires.
as far as the temp sensor it was just cut off clean near the thermostat box and control knob. There is no idication of where it would have hooked up so i think i'll leave that alone till someone that knows can look at it. |

Re: Please help erratic operation
hydro quip was nice enough to send me a wireing schematic. apparently someone before me tried to rewire the air switches perhaps in an attempt to bypass the faulty thermostat? at any rate i put the wireing the way they showed, installed the new thermostat and the spa works great now.
the light now only comes on when it feels like it so i will be checking an replacing the switch most likely for the light. |

Re: Please help erratic operation
Hi, i have a spa and i recently installed a new heater. The only big problem that I am having is that the temperature exceeds 110 degrees and the pump does not want to shut off. The highest temperature should be 104. Any suggestions ? |

Re: Please help erratic operation
Sounds like your thermostat may not be opening when it reaches temperature. Is this a digital system? |
