Hi, my first post here. Never had a hot tub before.

I just moved into a home that has what I think is a custom installed spa. Previous owners had not used it in years.

The 11 ft x 7 ft kidney shaped tub is located in the center of the deck and looks to be in great condition (the lid needs some work). The pumps, blower, filter and circuit breaker are in a shed about 30 ft away. The plumbing and wiring go through a boxed-in insulated conduit under the deck.

In the shed, there are two Hayward super pumps SP2607X10 (self prime) 1.5 hp, a Hayward Star-Clear C-750 filter, and a Conger Bros. "Santanna" blower. The pumps are plummed with 1-1/4 pvc. One pump goes through a Teledyne-Laars Electra II heater and then to a single large jet in the tub. This pump works fine. The blower works and the heater seems to work. I had the tub cleaned up, but when I turned on the blower, more dirt came out.

I have not been able to get the other pump to run. The wiring for this pump appears to go from the shed to a box near the tub. Inside that box, is an AS-1 air switch that has a small plastic tube broken off from the side. I don't know what this tube is for or what the air switch is supposed to do. Does it make since that the air switch would be the relay for the second pump?

Update:

Next to the Air Switch is a transformer - 120vac in to 15vdc out. I am thinking this goes to the light in the tub. The air switch (if it was working) must turn off the light.

I also found what looks like a thermocouple wire going to the big jet where the heated water enters the tub. Need to find the thermostat.

Still do not know if a relay controls the second "massager jet" pump. I seems to me this pump shoud be directly controlled by the circuit breaker switch. (but why would the wires not go directly to the pump)

I guess I need to get out my volt meter and check - the pump motor may be the problem.

Narrowing down the problems - air switchs defective.

-2 Hayward Super Pumps SP2607X10 (self prime) 240V

-AS1 and AS2 air switches.
-120vac - 15vdc transformer for light.
-Tub make unknown, but looks great.

There are several "Air Switches" that I assume were to protect from electric shock. These air switches were apparently defective (or tripped?) because when I bypassed the air switch, the pump and light work.

My question is: Should I replace the air switches with GFI breakers or get new air switches?

The Air Switches work on the priciple of Hydraulics that use displaced air to actuate a pressure senstive switch.

The easiset way to test them is use a portable air dust type can and push the nozzle into the tube. Squeeze the Trigger and have someone else watch the device it controls. if the device works then it is the prsessure actuator itself.

If it deosn't function then it would be the pressure switch.

So in answer to your question : you want to get new air switches as they are used as switches, that are 'safe' because no electricity flows through them and thus provide tub side safe control convience. " title="Very Happy" />
