| 2001 SDance Altamar 850 main pump quits at 30 minutes |
Tub purchased new, and no major issues until recently. Normal tub cycles are 20 minutes, and we sometimes enjoy 2 or more cycles. Recently the primary 2-speed Theramax pump shuts down about halfway thru the second cycle despite the control panel icon showing it to be working. Additionally the control panel icon remains on until I manually push the button to extinguish it. Have observed that after several hours pass, the primary pump works just fine on its slow (cleaning) speed. So is the pump simply getting too hot and shutting down because of thermal protection? If so, anything I can do short of replacing it? Or, is there an electrical relay or thingamabob sending/receiving the right/wrong message to/from the pump? My great thanks for any help with this! Hmmm.
So, after it just quits, if you push on the jets button it continues to do nothing or does it cycle between hi/lo like it's supposed to? |

Pageup, thanks much for your reply. When the pump quits and I press the jets button, the jets icon goes away and nothing happens with the pump. At that point in time I can again press the jets button, and the low speed icon appears with no pump action but with a sound like a relay click, and press again the hi speed icon appears with no pump action and that relay click sound. Left alone for awhile - usually until the next cleaning cycle, the pump comes back on its own low speed cleaning duty. The following day, the pump works just fine on low and hi speeds...until that 30 minute witching moment rolls around. We have not noticed any unusual pump noises since this problem began. Thanks again for your kind assistance in this mystery! George in 30214 |

Yeah try repeating same with pump cabinet open. Definitely sounds like the motor's thermal cut out is your problem. |

Thanks again Pageup. Is the motor's thermal cutout a part that can be replaced, or must we replace the motor (and attached pump)? In your experience, how often on average do motors konk out? Just trying to get an idea here of whether the motor is fixin to fry, or if it's "simply" a bum cutout device? Thanks very much! |

More than likely, the cut-out device is going bad, or you could have a bad run capacitor (if it's so equipped) that is causing the motor to draw more current than it should. Best option is to find a local motor shop that will replace the over heat sensor and capacitors on a 48 frame motor.
Or replace the pump. |

Sounds like a plan - thanks again Pageup!
