| New hot tub, 1st time owner ... jets not pumping right. |
Hi: 2 days ago we finally got our very first hot tub hooked up and running - we haven't actually been in it yet, since I'm still getting the chemicals set right. We I first got it going 2 days ago, I was playing with the controls, and the jets seemed very strong and really riled the water up. This morning I went out to turn them on (to mix up some calcium increaser) and the jets seem very weak. Also, Jet 1 is supposed to run on its own for 2 hours before turning off, and Jet 2 is supposed to run for 15 minutes before turning itself off. Both turn off after about 30 seconds. Any ideas ? |

Is the tub still under warranty? If so, I would get a service call booked in. If not, you may need to tear into the skirt and look inside |

Are there icons for each pump when you turn them on, and are they staying on when the pumps kick off? |

Re: New hot tub, 1st time owner ... jets not pumping right.
Hi - the hottub is brand new and is a Pinnacle "Meridian". So yes, it's still under warranty and that's the next obvious step is to get a warranty service. The topside pump control is a Balboa VL600S http://www.balboawatergroup.com/Spa_Topside_Panels?album=90. There is no icon when you turn on the jets, only an orange LED light. Supposed to press JET once for low speed, a second time for high speed, and a third time for off. When we press it the second time, we don't get high speed, it goes off instead. Also, when we turn it on low speed, it shuts itself off after about 1-2 minutes, even though the manual says it should run for 2 hours on low speed before shutting itself off. The manual also says it should run for 15 minutes on high speed and then turn itself off.
Thanks for the replies. I hope this is something simple. |

Re: New hot tub, 1st time owner ... jets not pumping right.
When you press the button the second time it goes off? or do you hear a click from the relay, and then it turns off if you press it a third time? Cause if you press it once then it goes on in slow speed, then second time is off, then third time is on low speed again that sounds weird, and something is not right. But if you press it once and it goes on in low speed, then if you press it the second time and nothing happens, and the third time turns off, then I would guess the the high speed wire is disconnected on the pump. How many times do you need to press the jet button between on in low speed, and then on in low speed again?
Bottom line, the tub is under warranty, so let the company that sold it to you send a tech out to look at it, and hopefully the tech knows what he is doing. It could easily be one of many things, wired wrong (or loose wire), spa pack setup wrong (wrong jumpers set) or a bad topside, hard to tell without me being there to play with it. |

Re: New hot tub, 1st time owner ... jets not pumping right.
Just wanted to give everyone an update. Apparently I wasn't listening as closely as I should have. When I pressed the JETS button the second time for high speed, the pump "tried" to wind up for the higher speed, but I just couldn't hear it very well. As it turns out, the GFCI breaker in the box next to the tub (outside installation) had a bad leg so only 120-volts was going to the pump (and the heater, which now explains why it would lose temperature so quickly when we took the cover off).
I had 240v coming into the box, but only 120 on the other side of the breaker. Well, guess what, 3 breakers later and it's still doing the same thing. Something, it seems to me, in the hottub is shorting out and burning up one leg of the breaker. However, it doesn't seem to be a dead short since it's not tripping the breaker, just burning one leg out.
Any ideas ? I can't afford to keep buying 2-leg GFCI breakers..... |
