| Pump Leaking, Wet side |
Hi guys,
I'll post some pictures a bit later, am at work right now and thought perhaps someone could help me out with this one.
Haven't run the Hot Tub in about a year now, I was having some FLO problems and since it was winter decided not use it till I could troubleshoot the problem in the summer. Needless to say, I believe it did freeze some water in the wet side of the pump as now that is where I have a leak.
I connected all the connectors for the tub, made sure there was no air lock and turned the Spa on at the GFI. Tub initialized, started heating and everything seems good for 10 to 20 minutes. When I checked the motor compartment everything looks tight, accept at the connector to the wet side of the pump was leaking fairly bad. Now I don't believe it is the 2" union nut that is leaking....but the wet side of the pump from what I can determine.
The pump itself toggles between low and high, the temp in the Spa was actually going up till I noticed the leak and shut it down.
So motor works fine (low, high), heater works fine...pump seals in the wet part of the pump or perhaps the housing of the wetside is leaking. I think it is internal to the wetside of the pump however, and with the pump working it doesn't take long till you have a fairly wet compartment.
Can you replace the seals in the wetside of the pump? Or perhaps you have to change the whole unit out (wet side or whole pump). I would prefer the wetside only, as the pump has never given me any trouble and like I mentioned it is strong and steady.
Anyone else have this part go?
I think I'll just have a repair person in but wouldn't mind some information so I know what is in store. I'll post some pictures a bit later if it is helpful...but any replies in the meantime would be appreciated.
Thanks, Suds |

Re: Pump Leaking, Wet side
If it's leaking from the shaft seal it is pretty easy to replace. You can take the pump to your local pump repair company. |

Re: Pump Leaking, Wet side
Thanks for answering Peteyboy.
Here is a pic of where it is leaking....and the leak is not the input shaft of the physical motor, it is the housing for the prop...there must be a few seals in there.

Re: Pump Leaking, Wet side
Petey,
The leak is not from the shaft seal, but from the impeller housing itself.
Could be the housing, or perhaps some seals in it. |

Re: Pump Leaking, Wet side
Hey Sudz, There is an o-ring on that wet end. You could pull the pump and unscrew the impeller housing. See if the o-ring looks good - if it does you might be able to lube it and that might owrk. Check for warpage and cracks also. Good Luck |

Re: Pump Leaking, Wet side
Peteyboy, thanks for taking the time to write you have been fantastic.
I ended up calling a Spa technician to come out today as I wasn't looking forward to unbolting the pump and wet end seeing it is tight in there, and I figured it was the wetend of the pump and I didn't wish to look around trying to source the right one in a timely manner.
The gentleman came over, and within an hour (total time) had the motor and pump out, and after looking it over gave me the option of replacing the entire wetend for $150 or just the cracked housing plate for $50. He had the right part in his truck and I was quite impressed that within an hour he was packed up and I was a satisfied customer. I could have replaced the entire wetend, however the impellor looked good and very little rust buildup on the shaft so the tech thought that would do the trick for me.
So I was out the door for a flat $180 for parts & labour...not bad for a total solution.
I will admit I was much more confident coming to this site and researching what my problem was and solutions to it. I was not only able to explain what I thought the problem was, but was knowledgeable enough to know what the solution would be.
So thank you Peteyboy for giving me your thoughts, it really was very nice of you.
And to everyone who frequents this forum, thanks for everyone contributing to help us all out.
I'm going to take a dip in my tub now......yeehaw! |
