Heater Relay question Bengal

Hello and thanks for all the good troubleshooting information on this board.

I have a 2005 Tiger River Bengal 240v (6KW heater) that is having problems of late.

First I noticed water dripping out of the Ozone unit. The check valve had failed and the unit was burned out.
I had recently done a drain and fill and the tub heated up OK.

When I replaced the ozone unit the other day, I noticed the tub temperature was warm (90-something) while it is set for 102 F.

Everything else is working ok - silent flow pump - ozone unit - jets....everything but heat.

This tub has the newer no-fault heater with no reset button. So today I turned off the power and disconnected the heater and checked the resistance going to the heater unit. It measured approximately 10 ohms. I then turned the power back on and measured the voltage going to the heater. It measured only 30 volts or so. I checked the AC lines coming into the terminal block (located on the heater control relay board, and verified that, in fact, 240 volts were coming into the controller).

I purchase the tub when it was a year old, so I have no warranty. The tub has been working flawlessly for over 3 years now.

My question is, can a Watkins heater relay board fail in such a way as to pass 30 volts onto the heating unit? (I was guessing all or nothing).

Thanks for any and all replies.

Re: Heater Relay question Bengal

Yes, the heater board is bad. They always read a low voltage amount like 15-30 volts when they have failed.

Re: Heater Relay question Bengal

HI;
I have a similiar problem with my spa. I have a Balboa Lite leader Circuit Board. S/N 54115. I recently noticed the spa wasnt heating properly. As I took the cover off of the control unit,I noticed a small spark coming from one of the heating relays. I turned the power off and used some contact cleaner on the heating relay. Worked great for about 2 weeks,and I did the samething today on it, (it was acting up ) so far so good. I noticed on Spa Depot that they have replacement relays for my board. Just a question,the new relay is about $10..00 the whole circuit board to replace is $133.00. I was thinking replacing just the relay. Are the relays soldered to the board?
Are the low voltage coils also getting there power from behind the board? I dont see any wires going to the coils ( low voltage )from the front,just the wires ( 240 volt ) that goes from the relays to the heating element. Everything works great,but when the relay starts acting up,it only affects the heating of the water in the spa. I know I have to either change the relay or the entire board.Any suggestions?
Thank you in advance!
