| No Heat after Replacing Heater Element |
Hello,
I have a 2001 Morgan Spas Monaco Model spa. It is hooked up with a dedicated 220 v circuit. The Control box has a label inside that has Morgan on it as well. I don't remember the model # on that label at this time. It has a topside Electronic type control.
It has 2 pumps with one of them being 2 speed and the other 1 speed.
And of course a blower.
The thermostat is the topside control pushbutton style.
The heater is a 2" stainless flow thru 15" long type.
Sorry to pound so much information at the onset but I wanted to accelerate the process as much as I can and give you enough info to arm you as well.
I was having an issue where my water temp was not warming up. By not warming up I am talking no more than outside temperature. Around 60 degrees. I thought that it might be the heater element so I replaced the heater element rather easily. After doing so and re-energizing the system I was getting a FL O code on my topside control. I talked to a service tech and he said that it was a no flow message and that there might be an air lock in the system. He explained that I needed to "bleed the system" to remove the air. I cut the power to the tub and I opened the air valve on the top of the filter canister and opened the union joint on the suction side of my pump to try to purge the air. Reenergized the system.
I was still getting the FL O message on the control panel. I tried this about 3 more times with no luck. I then drained my hot tub and refilled it thinking that, that may solve the FL O message. Nope. Still there. I then engaged both pumps and blower to try to exasperate the trapped air that way. That didn't work either. All the while no heater response. The water is still only 59 degrees. Oh btw I did pull the filter out of the canister to see if the filter was causing the flow issue. It is still out for now.
After scouring a few Spa websites troubleshooting links I bought a Multimeter. I checked the power coming into the control box. 244 volts which of course should be since all my pumps and blower seem to be working as expected. I then checked the power at the leads of the heater element. Lead to lead - no reading. Then I turned the power off to the spa, I removed the wires to the pressure switch I turned on the power and put a jump wire between the two leads to the pressure switch. I rechecked the voltage at the heater element posts lead to lead. No Reading again.
According to what I read that meant that the switch needed to be adjusted or replaced. I decided to try to adjust it. I reduced the sensitivity of the switch and I don't have the FL O message any more but still no heat.
Again I'm sorry for this long winded explaination but maybe this would reduce the emails back and forth with questions and answers.
Please HELP. Thanks in advance for your valuable time and knowledge. |

Your problem is still flow.
Check the pressure switch and the wire connectors that attach to it. It's possible that you may have broken a wire or dislodged something there.
FWIW - if you don't feel water coming out of the jets - then you've still got a water flow problem and the heater will never turn on unless it's safe to do so - that's the purpose of the flo error. |

Hello PageUp,
thanks for the quick response.
I really appreciate your time.
Actually there is water coming out of the jets even when pump 1 is not on. I don't see any change in velocity though when I do engage pump 1 in low speed. The velocity change when I go to the high speed on pump 1 is pretty substantial.
The temp setting is higher than the current water temp so the heater icon is displayed which is the heater call and I assume that the water flow that I am seeing is do to the heater call.
But I will recheck the pressure switch wires for breaks and proper seating as you suggest.
Like you say that it is still a flow problem, what is the steps to correct that?
thanks again for your time |
