| No Voltage to heater element but relay is energized w/pics |
Hello to all. I would like to thank everyone in advance for the assistance.
I have a 1996 Cal Spa with Balboa SC3000 controller, circuit board part # 50862, 240v 5.5kw element. All fuses are good. Good flow. Heres the deal. Zero voltage to the element but the display shows that the spa is heating and the heater relay is energized so the problem is in the circuit board specifically the heater circuit. The Hi limit relays are not energized and I am not quite sure as to the function of the Hi limit circuit and would appreciate some explanation. Also does anyone no where I can get a schematic for this circuit board. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The pics show the heater relay, (K and the hi limit relays (K6 &K7) on either side. Looks like jumper wire provides 240v from K6 to K8 but since K6 does not energize aka cold tub. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks, Joe

Re: No Voltage to heater element but relay is energized.
Pics aren't showing, Joe. If you pull the board and flip it over you may see which relay is defective from that angle. A diagram for the board itself is not available beyond what you have on the inside cover of the panel.
Here's a source for relays if you can do the replacement. |

Re: No Voltage to heater element but relay is energized.
Thanks spishex for the quick response. Pulling the circuit board was my next step to check solder joints and look for the crispies. I'm not sure why my pics aren't showing up now. They were there when I submitted the post. Oh well. Thanks for the tip on the relays.
Take care, Joe |

Re: No Voltage to heater element but relay is energized w/pics
I pulled the connector for the high limit and temp sensor and the control panel gave me an error code. Manually made the relay contacts for K6 & K7 and had 240V on the element. Either bad relays, solder joint, or other component. Anyone else had anything similar with the high limit relays? Checked on the price for a new circuit board...$400.00!!!!!!! Are you kidding me? I hope I can find the problem. Also where is a good place to get a replacement flow switch. Thanks all.

Re: No Voltage to heater element but relay is energized w/pics
If you search "spa flow switch" a few will pop up, including this guy. You'll need to know what size thread it goes into. The generic replacements use your existing cord and are pretty easy to put in.
If you're not able to get to the bottom of it, there are a few distributors that do circuit board repairs for ~$75/hr or so.
Maybe this link will make you feel a little better. Looks like your proprietary board has a few generic replacements. Take a close look around for P/N's 52518 and 54644. I think either of those would work for you, but you should probably call before ordering. |

Re: No Voltage to heater element but relay is energized w/pics
***UPDATE***
Today I removed the circuit board and tested the coils with a meter. They all checked good, about 255 ohms across the coil. Put the card back in to check some voltages at points I located on the card and now when I power up the spa I get error codes SN1, SN3, and ICE. I'm not sure why the symptoms changed but I believe that the problem is in one of the IC's on the card or a bad foil run on the card. Unless anyone else has any suggestions looks like I have to bite the bullet and shell $300 bucks. That sucks!
Thanks, Joe |

Re: No Voltage to heater element but relay is energized w/pics
That's three sensor errors in one. You plugged all your sensors back in when you put the board back in, right? If so, I think it's new board time. |
