| Another Spa Newbie.... bromine tabs? |
I just moved into my new house and it has a Grecian Spas 5 or 6 person spa with a Balboa pac. The water was clear and tested high Ph and absolute 0 on the chor/bromine. Luckily, the previous owner left me a ton of chemicals. I got the Ph within range, and shocked it. I dont know what kind of shock it was, but it had bromine in it and was designed for spas.
After 2 days, I tested it, Bromine levels on the upper end of the middle scale. I bought a floating dispenser and bromine tablets.
Ive heard people speak against chlorine tablets, but are bromine tablets ok for a floating dispenser? Also, how many tablets should I put in there - I put about 7 or 8 and put it on the middle setting for dispensing.
I went into it tonight, the water tested perfect beforehand. It was very nice. My skins feels a little dry and tight afterwards. Is there anything to add for that? |

Re: Another Spa Newbie.... bromine tabs?
Bromine tabs are perfect for spas. Fill your floater up completely. There should be some way of adjusting it. There's either one big hole that you can make bigger or smaller, or a few small holes that you can open more or less of. That will control the bromine dispersal rate rather than the number of tabs you have in it, so filling it will just mean you have to do it less often.
As for the dry skin, there are lots of things you can try out. First and foremost the water should be balanced, as you seem to have checked. A low pH or high bromine levels usually leave me feeling pretty dry. There are also products on the market that add borates to the water which some claim help in this regard (there are directions for doing this with regular borax for much less money, so if you want to go that route let me know and I'll pass them on). You can also find fragrances that are supposed to moisturize and I actually find those pretty useful. |

Re: Another Spa Newbie.... bromine tabs?
Thanks for the reply. I was at my spa store the other day and saw a little bottle of "aloe spa treatment", which was purported to give your skin a treatment and ward off any dry skin issues. I worry about adding anything and clogging up my filter/pump, etc... Should I try something like that? Is there a place online thats recommended to buy spa supplies at? |

Re: Another Spa Newbie.... bromine tabs?
Some stores will carry sample sizes, especially ones that carry "inSPArations" which come in little one oz packets. Grab a handful of different brands and see what works best. They're made for spa use and are water soluble. Keep the tub properly sanitized and shocked and you'll be fine. Just don't use a whole 8oz bottle every time you get in.
When I worked in a store folks with sensitive skin were particularly fond of Velvet Touch and Gentle Spa, the latter owing most of its power to borates as I mentioned above. But those just happen to be what we carried.
The bottle that I've used most recently is green tea scented Wellness, by inSPArations, and that did a good job. |
