| Bromine AND Chlorine??? HELP!!! |
First, I did read through all 9 pages of the forum and didn't see and exact answer or solution to my problem. If it is here and I missed it just point me to the post.
My tub came with the house I just bought and they were using Baqua Spa which I ended up HATING. I drained, washed, and refilled the tub and continued to use the Baqua Spa the old owners used and after just me in the tub three times, the water looked like skim milk and there were so many bubbles it was like a bubble bath. So I went to a rec supply store (chain in the Southeastern US) to get new chemicals for my hot tub. I told them I wanted a chlorine system and the guy there told me to use Brilliance Spa products. He gave me the Chlorine Granules (dichloro) AND a bromine based non-chlorine sanitizer. He also gave me the Brilliance start up packet (sodium bromide). I drained and refilled the tub (makes twice in a week) and I added the start up along with the chlorine AND non-chlorine sanitizer as he said to. Now I am thinking that was not a good idea. Nothing is wrong with the water, looks clear and tests are fine, but from what I have read online, you use one or the other but not both. Right now the "hot" tub is set not to heat because it is summer, so the issue with chlorine burning off at high temps isn't an issue. I was told to add the sanitizer straight to the tub, but now I find out it should be in a float, but too late..I can see it all over the bottom.
Can I continue to use both or should I use just the bromine sanitizer and then shock with the chlorine granules once a week??? And yes, I know I will have to get a float for the bromine. Did I screw up royally and now have to drain my tub?? |

Re: Bromine AND Chlorine??? HELP!!!
We sell Brilliance. It is a good product because it is almost pH neutral. You should put in at refill: a package of Start up, Metal & Scale Control, a floater with Brillinace crystals, and some non-chlorine shock. I don't know why they taled of using Brilliance and gave you Chlorine granuals. You check the floater and Ph & alkalinity weekly and add some Metal & Scale & Shock.

Re: Bromine AND Chlorine??? HELP!!!
I asked for chlorine is why they gave it to me. The issue is that they told me to use them together. |

Re: Bromine AND Chlorine??? HELP!!!
It won't hurt to use them together. You need to use 1/2 teaspoon per 250 gallons. If you use the spa daily then I would use the chlorine daily. Chlorine does burn out with heat but not that much. You can then shock weekly using a non-chlorine shock. I wouldn't even use the Brilliance Start-Up, which is bromine granules, the chlorine granules do the same thing. Lots of people will say they like Bromine - I like Chlorine. If you use Bromine then I heartily recommend Brilliance. Bromine tablets are very acidic. |
