| Simple Chemical Question |
Would value some advice here from knowledgeable member(s).
I purchased a new Sundance Hawthorne tub which was installed a few days ago. Since then it's had a LOT of use by family and my teenage sons friends. The dealer who installed it supplied me with a 'start-up' chemical kit which consisted of DY-CHLOR II chlorinator and 'Leisure Time Renew' non-chlorine shock. He told me to use the Renew once a week, and the DY-CHLOR II the first 3 times the tub was used, and then once a week. In addition to this a 'SunPurity' mineral cartridge was installed, plus the tub has a built-in ozonator. I keep the water around 99-101 degrees. As a total newbie I've been checking the water chemistry twice a day with test strips - everything is in order except the chlorine level keeps dropping, causing me to throw in DYCHLOR II to re-establish the level back to the required amount. In fact I've already used around 1/3 of the 1.75lb container supplied.
Is this normal for a new set-up? Are there any consequences to using this much chlorine?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! |

Re: Simple Chemical Question
The ozone will eat up the chlorine. If that mineral cartridge is a silver ion cartridge we use the non-chlorine shock before each use and the chlorine once a week. Be sure to replace the silver ion cartridge every 4 months.
You should only need to test the water weekly.
This advice depends on that cartridge being silver ion and the ozone working 24/7. If the ozone runs on filter cycles then use chlorine 3 times per week. 1/2 teaspoon per 250 gallons.
Anyone else?? |

Re: Simple Chemical Question
Thanks for the quick reply Petey.
The mineral cartridge I'm using is a Sundance product but the active ingredient IS listed as metallic silver (from silver nitrate), and yes - it recommends replacement every 4 months, so I guess this is exactly the type of product you refer to. The box it came in states it is "an alternative to Chlorine when used in conjunction with MPS (Potassium Peroxymonosulfate)", whatever that is!
The ozonator does work 24/7 via a small circulation pump.
Anyway, thanks again - I think you've cleared this one up for me! |

Re: Simple Chemical Question
I would never use it as an alternative to chlorine. It will reduce your chlorine usage. |
