| Spa Rash Discovery--Oxy-Brite |
A new cause for rashes has been identified.
If you have a rash, find out if your spa chemicals include Oxy-Brite.
If so, drain your spa completley, then try using it without Oxy-Brite.
(And if you are able to get an appointment with a dermatologist who specializes in contact dermatitis, get a patch test for potassium peroxymonosulphate or ammonium persulfate.) ---
Oxy-Brite is commonly used in spas and swimming pools as a shock treatment (to periodically clean the water.)
The rash looks like most allergy rashes (and has been mis-diagnosed as everything from scabies (mites) to bug bites to dry skin.
The rashes start small and can cover most of the body. Intense itching.
They may begin from 4 hour to 4 days after exposure. Rashes may begin more than a year after exposure. ---
Until recently, there were no medical journal reports, so doctors wouldn't consider linking rashes with spas/swimming.
Now there have been three reported cases. (It will probably be another year before my doctor's are published -- 2 from spas and mine from swimming pools.) --
Questions:
What else can we can do to spread the word so that spa users, swimmers, primary physicians and dermatologists add this to their list of suspects for rashes?
And get Dupont to conspicuously disclose to spa users that it has has caused rashes. (Or stop selling this product until it is safe.) ---
(Also known as: DuPont Oxone; potassium peroxymonosulphate; oxybrite) |

Re: Spa Rash Discovery--Oxy-Brite
Not new at all. I've been telling people for years that more people are allergic to non-chlorine shock (MPS, potassium peroxymonosulphate or anything else this Dupont product is called) than any other chemical used in spas. |
