| Storing a used Great Lakes Hot tub in cold weather |
I am a newbie to Hot Tubs. My husband and I are going to purchase a used 2 year old great lakes tub, which is being drained. We cannot hook it up until Mid november. I am concerned about water being in the pipes and freezing. How do I store this properly? |

Re: Storing a used Great Lakes Hot tub in cold weather
I'd suggest using a wet vac (aka Shop Vac) after draining to suck/blow all the water out of the plumbing, after disconnecting the barrel unions to pumps, blowers, heaters etc. You can often unscrew the tops off the diverter valves (if fitted) to suck/blow from here. Tilting the spa on end will also help to drain any remaining water.
All spas are different, but you just need to ensure that all the pipes are empty.
I would not reccomend putting antifreeze in the pipe work, as this can be very hard to remove, and provided the plumbing is dry, serves no purpose.
Once you have drianed all of the pipes completely, you need to ensure that no more water enter the spa from rain etc, so store inside a shed/barn etc, or make an adequate waterproof cover.
If in doubt, most local spa dealers will do some/all of this for you. |

Once you've drained it initially, by pump, siphon, drain, or whatever you choose, access the equipment and take out the drain plug in the pump and open up any unions and valves that are accessible there.
I also second the shop vac & tilt method. |
