This Part is a Thermodisc Style Surface Mount HI LIMIT: Single Pole Single Throw THERMAL FUSE Auto Reset (With NO CAPILLARY)
This Hi Limit Surface mount surface mounts to the heater in a spot where it can read what the actual water temperature is flowing through the heater. When the hi limit thermodisc reaches 121°F it flips inside out opening the circuit usually shutting down the entire system.. There are some brands of controls however that still operate the pumps and such except the heater does not operate until it resets the Bi-Metaliic wavy Disc inside that trips inside out when it reaches 121 degrees Fahrenheit. This is not always the best system since the friction from the water movement and the heat from the pump motors can continue raising the temperature of the water to even more unsafe levels..If the system did stop then as the water cools the metal will cool and will retake the previous shape and close circuit again and attempt to run the heater again.. Until the temp reaches 121° again and it will continue this cycle until the situation is solved. Some Hi Limits require a manual reset this one does not..

Note: To determine of your Thermodisc is defective you have a couple of different things to check, First there are (2) through circuits from one input side the of the disc the the second output side of the Thermodisc... Basically on the input side you will find a black 120V + leg tied to the screw in terminal marked (1) which goes through a switch that can be interrupted by the Thermodisc being tripped and opening the black leg from the screw tab numbered (2) that feeds to the heater. On the other side you will find a Red 120V + leg tied to the screw in terminal marked (3) which goes through a switch that can be interrupted by the Thermodisc being tripped and opening the red leg from the screw tab numbered (4) that feeds to the heater. This circuit is interrupted only when the temperature of the surface the thermodisc is mounted to reaches at 121° F at least and this switch will not auto reset when the temperature at the thermodisc drops below 121° it has to be manually reset but pushing in the bras colored tang sticking out of the top of the switch.. In many applications like a Len Gordon Plastic Housing 5"x 5" Square mounted heater flange will have a rivet that sticks through a hole in the plastic housing that can be pushed in to reset the thermodisc after it has cooled down..
