Hot Tub Suction and Return Fittings for Spa Plumbing Systems
Shop suction and return fittings for hot tub and spa plumbing systems. These fittings are critical components that control how water enters and exits your spa through pumps, jets, heaters, and circulation lines.
Suction fittings pull water from the spa into the pump system.
Return fittings send filtered and heated water back into the spa.
Proper sizing and installation ensure balanced water flow, efficient pump performance, and safe operation.
What Are Suction Fittings
Suction fittings are typically located on the lower portion of the spa shell and are connected to the pump intake line. These fittings often include grates or covers and must maintain proper flow to prevent pump cavitation.
Common suction plumbing sizes include
1-1/2 inch
2 inch
2-1/2 inch
What Are Return Fittings
Return fittings are located where water re-enters the spa after passing through the pump and heater. These fittings distribute water evenly throughout the spa and help maintain circulation.
Return fittings may connect directly to jet bodies or to dedicated circulation return lines.
Common return plumbing sizes include
1-1/2 inch
2 inch
Proper Sizing Is Critical
Using the wrong fitting size can restrict flow, reduce heating efficiency, and cause pump strain.
Always measure the outside diameter of rigid PVC pipe before ordering.
How to Measure Spa Plumbing
Nominal pipe size does NOT match actual outside diameter.
If you measure the outside of your pipe and it reads approximately 2.375 inch, you have 2 inch plumbing.
Standard PVC Pipe Outside Diameter Chart
Nominal Pipe Size Actual Outside Diameter
1/2 inch 0.840 inch
3/4 inch 1.050 inch
1 inch 1.315 inch
1-1/2 inch 1.900 inch
2 inch 2.375 inch
2-1/2 inch 2.875 inch
3 inch 3.500 inch
Slip vs Street Also Called Spigot
Slip fittings have an internal socket that accepts pipe.
Street fittings also called spigot have one male end with the same outside diameter as the same nominal pipe size. That male end inserts directly into a slip fitting.
Most suction and return fittings use slip style connections.
Common Suction and Return Components
• Suction Covers
• Suction Grates
• Return Wall Fittings
• Pump Suction Adapters
• Heater Return Adapters
• Slip and Threaded Return Fittings
Safety and Flow Considerations
Suction fittings must be properly matched to pump horsepower and plumbing diameter to prevent flow restriction and maintain safe operation.
Return fittings must allow adequate water distribution without creating excessive back pressure.
