Hot tub motor capacitors help spa pump motors start and run properly. When a capacitor fails, the pump may hum, fail to start, or trip the breaker. Replacing a weak or failed capacitor is often the fastest and most affordable way to repair a spa pump motor.
Most spa pumps use either a start capacitor, run capacitor, or both, depending on the motor design. These capacitors are commonly used on pump motors from manufacturers such as Aqua-Flo, Waterway, LX, Sta-Rite, Vico, and other spa pump brands.
It is important to understand that a failed capacitor is sometimes the symptom rather than the cause of a motor problem. In many cases, the real issue is the centrifugal start switch assembly located in the back of the motor. When these switches wear out or stick, the capacitor may repeatedly fail or the motor may not start properly.
Unfortunately, on many modern spa pump motors the start switch components are no longer sold separately, which means replacing the motor or the entire pump may ultimately be required.
When replacing a capacitor, always match the microfarad (MFD/µF) rating and voltage rating listed on the original capacitor to ensure proper motor operation.
If you are unsure which capacitor your spa pump requires, check the motor label or send us photos for assistance. Text photos to 772-800-5445 or call 844-500-4645 and we’ll help you identify the correct part.
