Ball valves are used in hot tub plumbing systems to control or shut off water flow to pumps, heaters, and other spa components. These valves are commonly installed in spa plumbing lines so equipment can be serviced without draining the entire hot tub.
A spa ball valve uses an internal rotating ball to quickly stop or allow water flow through the plumbing line. When the handle is turned, the ball rotates inside the valve body to either block or allow water to pass through.
Ball valves are commonly used on:
Spa pump plumbing lines
Equipment isolation plumbing
Water feature plumbing
General spa plumbing shut-offs
Ball valves are not commonly used in hot tub heating circuits. The internal design of a ball valve slightly reduces the inside diameter of the plumbing, which can restrict water flow.
Hot tub heater systems require proper water flow to operate safely. Because of this, most spa manufacturers use slice valves (also called gate valves) instead of ball valves in heating circuits.
Slice or gate valves open completely and do not restrict the internal pipe diameter, allowing full water flow through the plumbing system.
Spa owners often search for replacement ball valves when experiencing issues such as:
Hot tub plumbing leaking
Ball valve leaking around handle
Spa valve will not shut off water
Ball valve stuck or hard to turn
Water leaking from spa plumbing line
In many cases the internal seals of the valve body have worn out or the valve handle has broken.
Ball valves are used in many hot tubs and spa brands including:
Jacuzzi®
Sundance®
Marquis
Saratoga
Cal Spa
Master Spas
Dynasty
Dimension One
Hot Spring / Caldera
