Balboa electronic spa control systems are used in thousands of hot tubs and spas around the world. When a problem occurs, the spa’s topside control panel will display a Balboa error code to help identify what part of the system may be causing the issue.
These error codes are designed to alert spa owners and technicians to potential problems with key spa components such as:
• Temperature sensors
• Heater assemblies
• Flow switches
• Circulation pumps
• Spa packs and control boards
Understanding what a Balboa error code means can help you quickly diagnose the issue and determine whether the problem is caused by a simple maintenance issue, such as a dirty filter, or a component that may need to be repaired or replaced.
Many common Balboa spa error codes are related to water flow problems, heater safety shutdowns, or temperature sensor failures. In many cases, the solution is as simple as cleaning the spa filter, restoring proper water flow, or replacing a worn component like a sensor or flow switch.
Below you will find explanations for the most common Balboa spa error codes, what causes them, and which spa parts may be needed to fix the issue.
If you need help identifying the correct replacement part for your spa, we are happy to help.

The SN error code on a Balboa spa pack indicates that the system cannot properly read one of the temperature sensors.
How you diagnose the problem depends on which style sensor system your spa uses.
This setup uses one combined sensor assembly that includes:
Temperature Sensor Long Wire In Thermowell in Shell
High Limit Sensor Short wire in Pinch plate On Heater
Both sensors plug into the board using a single 4-pin connector.
These sensors rarely fail.
Much more common causes are:
• Sensor wires chewed by rodents
• Damaged wiring
• Loose or dirty board connection
Turn power OFF to the spa.
Unplug the 4-pin sensor connector from the board.
Inspect the wiring for damage.
Clean the connector pins if possible.
Plug the sensor back in firmly.
Restore power.
If the SN error clears, the problem was simply a poor connection.
You can replace the sensor assembly, but keep in mind that failure of this sensor type is uncommon. If This does not solve it then the likely cause is the board.
Note: There is a variation in this type sensor but it is rare. The standard is a 3/8" Bulb for the Temp Snesor and 1/4" for the Hi Limit. The Variation is both bulbes being 1/4" so be sure before you order. If your temp sensor is in the Thermowell in the shell then you have the 3/8" Bulb style.
Parts That Usually Fix It
This setup includes:
• Temperature sensor in the side wall of the spa
• High-limit sensor mounted in the heater tube
Both use 2-pin connectors.
These are known as M7 sensors.
These sensors do fail sometimes, so replacement often fixes the problem.
If your spa shows SN error with this setup, the most likely cause is:
Bad M7 temperature sensor
Replace the sensor.
You can find replacement sensors here:

Many modern Balboa systems use:
• Two M7 sensors
• One on each end of the heater tube
• No pressure switch
This system measures water flow and temperature electronically.
• One bad sensor
• Both sensors bad
• Control board failure
Instead of buying two sensors immediately:
Buy one sensor.
Install the new sensor on the left side of the heater.
Move the old left sensor to the right side.
Power up the spa.
You had one bad sensor and the problem is fixed.
Move the old sensor you removed from the left to the right side.
If the error continues after swapping sensors:
The control board is likely bad.
Sometimes the issue is simply poor electrical contact.
Before replacing parts:
Turn power OFF
Unplug the sensor from the board
Clean the connector pins
Plug it back in securely
Restore power
If the error clears, the issue was just a bad connection.
Bad M7 sensor
Loose or dirty sensor connector
Chewed or damaged wiring
Failed control board (less common)
