Balboa electronic spa control systems are used in thousands of hot tubs and spas around the world. When a problem occurs, the spa’s topside control panel will display a Balboa error code to help identify what part of the system may be causing the issue.
These error codes are designed to alert spa owners and technicians to potential problems with key spa components such as:
Understanding what a Balboa error code means can help you quickly diagnose the issue and determine whether the problem is caused by a simple maintenance issue, such as a dirty filter, or a component that may need to be repaired or replaced.
Many common Balboa spa error codes are related to water flow problems, heater safety shutdowns, or temperature sensor failures. In many cases, the solution is as simple as cleaning the spa filter, restoring proper water flow, or replacing a worn component like a sensor or flow switch.
Below you will find explanations for the most common Balboa spa error codes, what causes them, and which spa parts may be needed to fix the issue.
If you need help identifying the correct replacement part for your spa, we are happy to help.

The SN error code on a Balboa spa pack indicates that the system cannot properly read one of the temperature sensors.
How you diagnose the problem depends on which style sensor system your spa uses.
This setup uses one combined sensor assembly that includes:
Both sensors plug into the board using a single 4-pin connector.
These sensors rarely fail.
Much more common causes are:
If the SN error clears, the problem was simply a poor connection.
You can replace the sensor assembly, but keep in mind that failure of this sensor type is uncommon. If this does not solve it then the likely cause is the board.
Note: There are three variations in this type of sensor but it is rare. The standard is a 96" with 3/8" Bulb for the Temp Sensor and 31" with 1/4" for the Hi Limit. One variation is both wire being 96" with a 3/8" & 1/4" Bulb. Another variation is both bulbs being 1/4" with a 96" and 31" Wire. Please be sure before you order. If your temp sensor is in the Thermowell in the shell then you have the 3/8" Bulb style most likely.

This setup includes:
Both use 2-pin connectors.
These sensors do fail sometimes, so replacement often fixes the problem.
If your spa shows SN error with this setup, the most likely cause is:
Bad M7 temperature sensor
Replace the sensor.

Many modern Balboa systems use:
This system measures water flow and temperature electronically and requires at least 23 GPM of water flow between the sensors to operate.
Note: Low flow will not cause a SN code but will cause a LF or Flo code.
Instead of buying two sensors immediately:
Buy one sensor.
Install the new sensor on the left side of the heater.
Move the old left sensor to the right side.
Power up the spa.
You had one bad sensor and the problem is fixed.
Move the old sensor you removed from the left to the right side.
If the error continues after swapping sensors:
The control board is likely bad.
Sometimes the issue is simply poor electrical contact.
Before replacing parts:
If the error clears, the issue was just a bad connection.

Troubleshooting
Meaning
The system detects very low or no water flow through the heater.
Common Causes
Parts That Usually Fix It
Meaning
The heater is detected as running without water flow, which triggers a safety shutdown.
Common Causes
Parts That Usually Fix It
Meaning
Water temperature inside the heater has exceeded the safe limit.
Common Causes
Note: if your system is full M7 and the pump that pushes through the heater is not working it will fire the heater with no water movement and cause a HL code. In this case the water in the tub would be cold but the heater tube would be very hot. Caution DO NOT Touch the tube in this case it will burn you!
