Gate valves, also commonly called slice valves, are used in hot tub plumbing systems to isolate sections of plumbing during repairs or maintenance. These valves allow spa technicians to shut off water flow to pumps, heaters, or other equipment without draining the entire spa.
Slice valves are one of the most common plumbing valves used in hot tubs because they allow technicians to service pumps and heaters without draining the entire spa.
Slice valves operate using an internal sliding gate that moves up or down to stop or allow water flow through the plumbing line. When fully open, the valve allows full water flow with no internal restriction, making them ideal for use in spa circulation and heater plumbing lines.
Because slice valves do not reduce the internal diameter of the plumbing, they are commonly used in hot tub heating circuits and pump plumbing where maintaining proper water flow is important.
Unlike ball valves, which slightly reduce the inside diameter of the pipe, slice valves open completely with no restriction to water flow. Proper water flow is critical for spa heater operation and helps prevent heater flow errors or overheating.
For this reason many hot tubs use slice valves on pump and heater plumbing lines.
Spa owners may replace slice valves when experiencing problems such as:
Hot tub valve leaking
Slice valve handle broken
Valve stuck open or closed
Spa plumbing leak near valve
Valve not shutting off water
Water leaking around valve seals
Over time the internal seals can wear out or the valve body may crack from age or freezing conditions.
Gate valves (slice valves) are used in many spa brands including:
Jacuzzi®
Sundance®
Marquis
Dynasty
Cal Spa
Master Spas
Saratoga
Dimension One
Hot Spring / Caldera
